What is the free D&D monster generator?
LoreKeeper’s Monster Generator is a free D&D 5e monster maker. Describe a creature in a sentence, pick a challenge rating from 1/8 to 20 (or leave it on Any), and in about 30 seconds you get a complete stat block balanced to that CR — Armor Class, hit points, speed, ability scores, senses, traits and actions — plus original artwork and the lore behind it. No account is needed to try it, and you can download the result as a PDF or save it to your world.
A monster you can actually run
Most monster generators give you numbers or a picture. This one gives you a creature you can run: the stat block follows the 5e layout your players already know, the hit points and attack bonus sit where the Dungeon Master’s Guide expects them for the CR you picked, and the lore tells you what it wants, where it lairs and why the party might meet it.
Be as specific as you like. “A cave troll that collects lost shoes” and “CR 9 frost giant shaman who speaks for a dead god” both work. If you leave CR on Any, the generator reads the threat level from your description. If you need a type, the pages below start the generator on dragons, undead, demons, aberrations, beasts, constructs, elementals, fey, bosses and low-CR monsters, each with a worked example.
Every result can be downloaded as a PDF for the table. With a free LoreKeeper account the monster goes into your world’s bestiary, where you can give it more art, pin its lair on your world map and ask Lore Assist how it fits your setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the D&D monster generator free?
Yes. You can generate monsters without an account, with a small free allowance each day. A free LoreKeeper account lets you keep going and save monsters to your world.
How do I make a balanced 5e monster?
Start from the challenge rating you want, then match the Dungeon Master’s Guide targets for that CR: Armor Class, hit points, attack bonus, damage per round and save DC. A CR 5 monster, for example, has about AC 15, 131–145 hit points, +6 to hit, 33–38 damage per round and a save DC of 15, with a +3 proficiency bonus and 1,800 XP. The generator does this for you when you pick a CR.
What CR should a monster be for my party?
By the 2014 Dungeon Master’s Guide encounter maths, for four characters of level 1 to 4 a single monster whose CR equals the party level is a medium fight, one CR higher is hard and two higher is deadly: for four 3rd-level characters, CR 3 is medium, CR 4 is hard and CR 5 is deadly. From 5th level characters outpace CR, so a solo monster needs a CR about three above the party level to be hard. Groups of monsters count for more than their XP total, so lower the CR when you add minions.
What does a generated stat block include?
Size, type and alignment, Armor Class, hit points with hit dice, speed, the six ability scores with modifiers, saving throws and skills where relevant, damage resistances and immunities, senses, languages, challenge rating, traits, actions and, for bosses, legendary actions. You also get artwork and a short lore write-up.
Can I use the monsters in Foundry VTT, Roll20 or D&D Beyond?
Yes. The stat block is plain 5e text, so you can copy it into a Roll20 or Foundry VTT character sheet, paste it into a Foundry statblock-import module, or type it into the D&D Beyond homebrew monster creator. You can also download a PDF to print or hand out.
Does it work with the 2024 (5.5e) rules?
Yes. Generated monsters use the 5e stat block layout, and challenge rating, XP by CR and proficiency bonus by CR are the same in the 2014 and 2024 rules, so they drop into either game.
Can I choose the challenge rating?
Yes. Pick any CR from 1/8 to 20 before you forge. The generator scales hit points, Armor Class, attack bonus, damage and save DCs to that CR. Leave it on Any to let the description decide.
Can I use generated monsters in my campaign or homebrew?
Yes. Monsters you generate are yours to run at your table and to build into your own homebrew. Save them to a free LoreKeeper world to keep the stat block, art and lore together.
