What is the D&D Dungeon Map Generator?

This free dungeon map generator draws a D&D dungeon from one sentence. Describe it — a tomb, mine, lair, sewer or ruined temple — and in about a minute you get a top-down map on a 5-foot square grid, a key of named rooms with what is in each, traps and hazards, and the dungeon’s history. Download it for your VTT or print. No account needed.

Example map: Barrowmere Tomb

What comes with the art: a key of named locations, hazards you can run and the history of the place.

Barrowmere Tomb

Dungeon · Square grid, 5 ft per square

The burial vault of a dwarven clan, broken open by a river that changed course and then looted by goblins who are now trapped inside with what woke up.

Map key

  1. 1.Riverbreach

Where the river burst in: a mud slope down into the tomb. The goblins’ rope ladder is still here.

  2. 2.Hall of Ancestors

Twelve stone dwarf statues in niches. One has been knocked over, and the gap is where the goblins got in.

  3. 3.Goblin Barricade

Coffin lids stacked into a wall across the corridor, half cover. Six goblins hold it, facing inwards.

  4. 4.Ossuary Loop

A ring corridor lined with bones that connects rooms 2 and 5 — the party’s way around the barricade.

  5. 5.Founder’s Crypt

The clan founder’s sarcophagus, lid shattered from the inside. A wight in dwarven mail sits on the throne beside it.

  6. 6.Flooded Treasury

Chest-deep water over the clan’s grave goods. Anything taken from here wakes the statues in room 2.

Hazards

  • Pressure plates in the Ossuary Loop: DC 13 Wisdom (Perception) to spot; a creature that steps on one triggers a bone-dart volley (+5 to hit, 2d4 piercing).
  • Chest-deep water in the treasury: difficult terrain, and Small creatures must swim.
  • The founder’s curse: a creature that takes treasure must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to willingly leave the tomb until the treasure is returned.

History

The Barrowmere clan buried its founders here for three hundred years. When the river moved, nobody was left to move the dead.

D&D Dungeon Map tips

A dungeon is a story told in rooms. Tell the generator what the place was built for and what happened to it — “a dwarven tomb flooded by a river and looted by goblins” — and it draws the layout and keys the rooms to match.

Good dungeons have loops, not just corridors: a second route lets the party sneak, retreat or flank. Mention a secret passage, a collapsed section or a flooded level and the map will include it.

Use the key as your session notes. Each room has a purpose and something to deal with, and the hazards list gives you DCs and damage ready to run.

Fill it with monsters

The free monster generator makes the creatures that live there, with 5e stat blocks at the CR your party needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big should a D&D dungeon be?

For one session, five to eight keyed rooms is plenty. A two- or three-session dungeon might have twelve to twenty rooms across one or two levels.

Does the dungeon map have a grid?

Yes. Dungeons default to a square grid at 5 feet per square, the 5e standard. You can switch to a hex grid or no grid, and toggle the grid on the result.

Does it generate traps?

The hazards list on each dungeon includes traps and environmental dangers with save DCs and damage you can run straight from the page.

Can I stock the dungeon with monsters?

Use the free monster generator for the creatures — set the CR to your party — and place them as tokens on the map preview or pin them to your world map with a free account.

Can I import the dungeon into Foundry VTT or Roll20?

Yes. Download the map image, import it as a scene or page background and align the VTT grid to the map’s 5-foot squares.
