How elf names work

Elven names are built to be sung. They favour open vowels, soft consonants like l, n, r and th, and often run to three or four syllables. Female names tend to end in -a, -iel or -wen, male names in -ion, -dor or -as, but elves are long-lived and tradition bends: a name that sounds feminine to a human ear may belong to a 400-year-old archer.

Most D&D elves carry a family or house name as well. These are sometimes kept in Elvish (Liadon, Galanodel, Siannodel) and sometimes translated into Common as compound words such as Moonwhisper, Silverfrond or Nightbreeze. Wood elves lean towards the nature compounds, high elves towards the old Elvish forms, and drow names turn harsher with doubled consonants and hard z and x sounds.

Use the world flavour box to steer the result. "Seafaring elves" produces tidal, salt-worn names; "ancient, fading empire" produces longer and more formal ones. Every roll gives you ten names with a short meaning so you can pick the one that fits the character, not just the one that sounds nice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a drow or dark elf name?

Type "drow" or "dark elf" into the world flavour box. The generator shifts to harder consonants, doubled letters and Underdark house names like Baenre or Do'Urden in style.

Do elf names include a surname?

Yes. Most results include an Elvish house name or a translated compound surname such as Moonwhisper. Use only the first name if your world does not use family names.

Are these names official D&D elf names?

They follow the naming conventions of the Player's Handbook and Forgotten Realms elves but every name is newly generated, so you will not find them in any published adventure.

Build on the name

Names are the first step. LoreKeeper's other free generators build the character, the creature and the place around them, and a free account keeps everything together in one world.
