What is the Demon & Fiend Generator?

This free demon generator creates custom 5e fiends — chaotic demons, scheming devils or something in between — with a stat block at any challenge rating. Fiends get the traits that make them feel infernal: resistances to cold, fire and lightning, poison immunity, darkvision 120 feet, telepathy and often Magic Resistance, plus artwork and lore about what they want from mortals. Free to use, no account needed.

Example stat block: Rattlemaw

A CR 4 fiend (demon) made with this generator, with every number worked out by the 5e rules.

Magic Resistance. The rattlemaw has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Bone Rattle. The rattlemaw’s ribs clatter as it moves. It can’t hide, and creatures within 30 feet of it have disadvantage on Concentration checks.

Actions

Multiattack. The rattlemaw makes one Bite attack and two Claw attacks.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) slashing damage.

A rattlemaw is what the Abyss sends when a summoner gets the circle almost right. It is bound to fetch one thing and will tear through anything between it and that thing — including the summoner.

Demon & Fiend design tips

Demons and devils play differently. Demons are hunger and chaos: give them more attacks, gruesome traits and a reason to be loose on the Material Plane. Devils are contracts and hierarchy: give them fewer attacks, more control, and something they will offer the party.

Typical fiend defences in 5e are resistance to cold, fire and lightning damage and to nonmagical weapons, plus immunity to poison. That makes them tougher than their hit points suggest, so a low-level party without magic weapons will find a fiend about one CR harder than the number says.

Write the bargain into your description — “a devil who collects promises and wears them as rings” — and the generator gives you a hook as well as a fight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a demon and a devil in 5e?

Both are fiends. Demons are chaotic evil creatures of the Abyss, driven by destruction; devils are lawful evil creatures of the Nine Hells, driven by hierarchy and contracts. Their stat blocks share resistances and poison immunity but play very differently.

What resistances do fiends have?

Most demons and devils resist cold, fire and lightning damage, and many resist bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks. Nearly all are immune to poison damage and the poisoned condition.

How strong should a demon be for my party?

Because of their resistances, treat a fiend as about one CR higher than listed if your party has no magic weapons. For four 4th-level characters, a single CR 4 demon is a medium fight on paper and plays like a hard one.

Can I generate a demon lord or archdevil?

Yes. Set a high CR and describe its domain. High-CR fiends get spellcasting, Legendary Resistance, legendary actions and lair lore.

Is the demon generator free?

Yes. No account is needed and there is a small daily free allowance. Sign up free to save fiends to your world.
