What is the Low CR Monster Generator?

This free low-CR monster generator makes 5e monsters from CR 1/8 to CR 4 for parties of level 1 to 4. Low-level characters have few hit points, so the generator keeps damage per round in the Dungeon Master’s Guide range for the CR, avoids save-or-lose effects and gives each creature simple tactics, plus artwork and lore. Free, no account needed.

Hold Breath. The mirebeak can hold its breath for 1 hour.

Mud Ambush. The mirebeak has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide in mud or shallow water, and on attack rolls against a creature it surprised.

Actions

Beak. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d8 + 1) piercing damage. If the target is holding a shiny object, it must succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or the mirebeak snatches it.

Mirebeaks nest in reed beds and line their nests with stolen buckles, coins and spoons. A party that loses something at a swamp camp should look for the nest before the thief.

Low CR Monster design tips

Tier 1 is where homebrew monsters most often go wrong. A 1st-level wizard might have 8 hit points; a monster that deals 12 damage in one hit at CR 1/2 is not a challenge, it is a funeral. The generator keeps damage in band: about 2–3 per round at CR 1/8, 6–8 at CR 1/2, 9–14 at CR 1 and 27–32 at CR 4 across all attacks.

All monsters from CR 0 to CR 4 have a +2 proficiency bonus, so the differences come from ability scores, hit points and how many attacks they make. XP runs from 25 at CR 1/8 to 1,100 at CR 4.

Low-CR monsters are at their best in groups and with a trick: an ambush, a terrain advantage, a reason to flee. Describe the behaviour and the generator adds it as a trait.

Frequently Asked Questions

What CR monster is right for a level 1 party?

By the 2014 Dungeon Master’s Guide maths, for four 1st-level characters a single CR 1/2 monster is an easy fight, CR 1 is medium and CR 2 is deadly. Groups of CR 1/8 or 1/4 creatures make the best tier-one encounters.

What is the proficiency bonus for low-CR monsters?

Every monster from CR 0 to CR 4 has a +2 proficiency bonus. It rises to +3 at CR 5.

How much XP is a low-CR monster worth?

CR 0 is worth 0 or 10 XP, CR 1/8 is 25, CR 1/4 is 50, CR 1/2 is 100, CR 1 is 200, CR 2 is 450, CR 3 is 700 and CR 4 is 1,100 XP.

Why do homebrew monsters kill low-level characters?

Usually too much damage in a single hit or a save-or-lose effect. Keep a CR 1/2 monster to about 6–8 damage per round and avoid stuns and paralysis below CR 2.

Is the low-CR monster generator free?

Yes. You can generate without an account, within a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep going and save.
