What is the D&D Dragon Generator?

This free D&D dragon generator builds a custom 5e dragon from one sentence. Choose a CR — wyrmlings sit around CR 1–4, young dragons CR 6–10, adults CR 13–17 and ancients CR 20+ — and you get a stat block with bite and claw attacks, a breath weapon with a save DC that matches the CR, legendary actions for adults and older, plus artwork, a lair and a hoard. No account is needed.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10 + 4) piercing damage plus 3 (1d6) fire damage.

Cinder Breath (Recharge 5–6). The wyrmling exhales burning ash in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 24 (7d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.

Cinderscales hatch in the ash of burnt-out towns and grow by sleeping on what survived the fire. A wyrmling will bargain before it fights, and every bargain is for coins.

D&D Dragon design tips

A good dragon is a personality with a breath weapon, so start with the personality: “a vain copper dragon who runs a riddle contest from a ruined lighthouse” gives the generator far more to work with than “red dragon CR 10”. Then set the CR for the age you want.

Breath weapons in 5e recharge on a 5–6 and are built around a save DC of 8 + proficiency bonus + Constitution modifier. The generator follows that rule and the damage dice scale with age, so a wyrmling’s cone is 15 feet and an ancient dragon’s is 90.

Adult and ancient dragons are solo bosses: they get Legendary Resistance and three legendary actions, which is what lets one creature stand up to a full party. If you want a dragon to fight alongside other monsters, keep it young and skip the legendary actions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What CR is a dragon in 5e?

It depends on age. Chromatic and metallic wyrmlings are CR 1 to 4, young dragons CR 6 to 10, adult dragons CR 13 to 17 and ancient dragons CR 20 to 24. Pick the CR in the generator to set the age.

How is a dragon breath weapon DC worked out?

Breath weapon save DCs use 8 + the dragon’s proficiency bonus + its Constitution modifier. A wyrmling with Con 17 and a +2 proficiency bonus has DC 13.

Do generated dragons get legendary actions?

Adult and ancient dragons do, along with Legendary Resistance (3/Day), because they are designed to fight a whole party alone. Wyrmlings and young dragons don’t.

Can I make a dragon that isn’t chromatic or metallic?

Yes. Describe any dragon — ash, spore, storm, gem or something entirely new — and the generator invents its breath weapon, damage type and lair to match.

Is the dragon generator free?

Yes. It is free to use with no account, with a small daily allowance. Sign up free to keep generating and save dragons to your world.
