What is the free D&D tavern generator?

LoreKeeper’s Tavern Generator is a free D&D tavern and inn maker. Describe the place in a sentence, or leave it blank to be surprised, pick a setting, a mood and a price range, and in about 30 seconds you get a complete tavern: its name and the sign over the door, a description to read aloud, the keeper with a personality, a quirk and a secret, the staff and regulars, a food and drink menu with prices in copper, silver and gold, a signature drink, rooms for the night and rumours to overhear, plus an illustration. No account is needed to try it, and you can download it as a PDF or save it to your world.

The Salt-Stained Lantern

the last light before the reef

Low beams, tar smoke and a fire that never goes out. The Lantern leans against the harbour wall so close to the water that the cellar floods at spring tide, and the fishing fleet drinks here when the weather is too bad to sail.

Over the door

A cracked ship’s lantern on a chain, painted with a gull.

Gruff, kind, and impossible to lie to.

Quirk

Polishes the same pewter mug all night and never serves from it.

How to make a D&D tavern in four steps

  1. Describe the tavern. Write a sentence about what kind of place it is, e.g. “a smugglers’ bar inside a beached whale”, or leave it blank to be surprised.
  2. Pick a setting, vibe and prices. Choose where it stands (city, port, roadside, underground…), its mood (cosy, seedy, haunted…) and a 5e price tier, or leave them on Any.
  3. Open the doors. In about 30 seconds you get the sign, the keeper and their secret, staff, regulars, a priced menu, rooms, rumours and an illustration.
  4. Use it at the table. Download it as a PDF, read the description aloud when the party walks in, or save it to your LoreKeeper world and chat with the keeper.

A tavern you can actually run

A tavern is where most campaigns start and where the party comes back to, so it deserves more than a name. This generator gives you everything you need to run one at the table: who is behind the bar and what they want, who is drinking in the corner, what a bowl of stew costs and what the party will hear if they listen.

Prices follow the 5e lifestyle tiers from the Player’s Handbook, from squalid to aristocratic, so a modest inn charges what your players expect and a wealthy one tells them they are out of their depth. Every price is written as coins (cp, sp, gp), ready to read out.

The keeper’s secret is for you, not the players: it sits behind a reveal on the page and turns a place to sleep into a quest hook. With a free LoreKeeper account the tavern goes into your world as a location with its own lore, and the keeper becomes a character you can chat with in character.

Give the keeper a face

The free NPC generator makes a tavern keeper with a portrait, a 5e stat block and a backstory to match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the D&D tavern generator free?

Yes. You can generate taverns without an account, with a small free allowance each day that the tavern, monster, character and map generators share. A free LoreKeeper account lets you keep going and save taverns to your world.

What does a generated tavern include?

A name and a short epithet, the sign over the door, a description to read aloud, the keeper (race, personality, a quirk, a secret and a stat line), up to six staff and eight regulars, a food and drink menu with prices, a signature drink, rooms with prices, three rumours, notable features and an illustration.

How much do food, drink and rooms cost in a 5e tavern?

The Player’s Handbook lists an inn stay at 7 cp (squalid) to 4 gp (aristocratic) a day, a meal at 3 cp to 2 gp, a mug of ale at 4 cp and a pitcher of common wine at 2 sp. The generator prices each tavern from the lifestyle tier you pick, so a poor roadside inn and an upscale city club charge very different amounts.

How do I name a tavern?

The best tavern names tell a small story: an object and a twist (The Salt-Stained Lantern), a person (Nana Birch’s Taproom) or an event (The Broken Axle). The generator names every tavern this way, and our lists of tavern names and inn names have hundreds more ideas.

Can I keep the keeper’s secret from my players?

Yes. The secret is hidden until you reveal it, and the PDF only shows it if you reveal it first. It is meant as a hook for the GM: the reason the party should come back.

Can I use the generated taverns in my campaign?

Yes. Taverns you generate are yours to run at your table and to build into your homebrew. Free taverns may also appear in the public LoreKeeper Tavern Directory, where anyone can borrow them.

Does it work for Pathfinder or other systems?

Yes. Everything except the keeper’s short stat line is system-neutral, and coin prices in cp, sp and gp work in any classic fantasy game.
