Spider Climb. The hearthcrawler can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings and up chimneys, without needing to make an ability check.

Ember Feeder. A hearthcrawler that starts its turn in a fire regains 5 hit points.

Actions

Multiattack. The hearthcrawler makes two Ember Claw attacks.

Ember Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) slashing damage plus 2 (1d4) fire damage.

Hearthcrawlers live in chimneys and eat embers. Inns that never seem to need firewood usually have one, and usually feed it, until the winter it decides the cook is fuel.

Random Monster design tips

Random encounter tables get stale: by the third session the party has met every wolf and bandit on the list. A random monster generator gives you a creature nobody at the table has read the stats for, which brings the mystery back.

Give it the place and the mood rather than the monster — “mountain pass, blizzard, something watching” — and let the generator decide what it is. Set the CR to the party’s level for a medium fight, or one or two lower for a road encounter that shouldn’t eat resources.

Every result comes with lore, so a random fight can become a hook: where it came from, what it was guarding, what else is out there.

Give it somewhere to live

The free map generator draws the lair, cave or ruin, with a grid, hazards and a key of locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I generate a random monster for an encounter?

Tap one of the suggested prompts or type a few words about the place and mood, pick a CR around your party’s level, and forge. You get a full 5e stat block, artwork and lore.

What CR should a random encounter be?

For a travel encounter that shouldn’t drain the party, pick a CR one or two below the party’s level. For a proper fight at levels 1 to 4, match the party’s level for a medium encounter with four characters; higher-level parties need a CR two or three above their level.

Can I roll the same kind of monster again?

Yes. Keep the same prompt and forge again for a variation, or change one word to steer it.

Do random monsters come with stat blocks?

Yes. Every result includes a complete 5e stat block, original artwork and lore, and you can download it as a PDF.

Is it free?

Yes. No account is required for a small daily allowance. Sign up free to keep rolling and save the ones you like.
