Shapechanger. The mimic can use its action to polymorph into a book, a scroll case or a writing desk, or back into its true, ink-black form. Its statistics are the same in each form.

False Appearance (Object Form Only). While the mimic remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary object.

Actions

Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage plus 9 (2d8) acid damage.

Ink Spray (Recharge 5–6). The mimic sprays ink in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.

Inkblot mimics live in libraries and eat paper, but they prefer the hands that turn it. A wizard’s tower with a suspiciously well-thumbed spellbook should be searched with a pole.

Homebrew Monster design tips

The hard part of homebrew isn’t the idea, it’s the maths. Hit points, attack bonus, damage per round and save DCs all have to land near the Dungeon Master’s Guide targets for the CR, or a creature that looks fun on paper deletes a character in round one.

The generator handles the maths and keeps the idea. Describe what makes your monster unusual — what it eats, how it hunts, what it is afraid of — and those become the traits, not just the flavour text.

Then make it yours. Save it to a LoreKeeper world, tweak the numbers, give it more art and ask Lore Assist how it fits into your setting.

Give it somewhere to live

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a homebrew monster in 5e?

Pick a CR, set Armor Class, hit points, attack bonus, damage per round and save DC near the Dungeon Master’s Guide targets for that CR, then add two or three traits that express the idea. The generator does all of this from a one-sentence description.

How do I check a homebrew monster is balanced?

Work out a defensive CR from hit points and AC, and an offensive CR from damage per round and attack bonus or save DC, then average them. If they are more than two apart, the creature will feel too swingy.

Can I edit a generated monster?

Yes. Download the PDF and edit by hand, or save it to a free LoreKeeper world and change any field there.

Can I publish homebrew made with the generator?

Monsters you generate are yours to use in your games and your own homebrew. Check the LoreKeeper terms before selling anything commercially.

Is the homebrew monster maker free?

Yes. No account is needed, within a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep going and save.
