What is the D&D Beast Generator?

This free D&D beast generator makes custom 5e animals — giant beasts, dire predators, mounts and companions — with a full stat block at the challenge rating you choose. Beasts have no magic and no languages, so the generator builds them from movement, senses and natural attacks such as Charge, Pounce and Pack Tactics, then adds artwork and notes on habitat and behaviour. Free, no account needed.

Example stat block: Thornback Boar

Charge. If the boar moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a Tusk attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 7 (2d6) slashing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Thorn Hide. A creature that touches the boar or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 2 (1d4) piercing damage.

Relentless (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). If the boar takes 10 damage or less that would reduce it to 0 hit points, it is reduced to 1 hit point instead.

Actions

Tusk. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage.

Thornbacks root through bramble thickets until the thorns grow into their hide. Farmers plant hawthorn hedges to keep them out, which is how the boars got the thorns in the first place.

D&D Beast design tips

Beasts are the creatures of the natural world, which makes them the backbone of wilderness travel and the best monsters for early levels. They are also the stat blocks druids Wild Shape into and rangers choose as companions, so clean, readable numbers matter.

Good beast design comes from how the animal hunts. A boar charges, a wolf pack flanks, a giant owl strikes from above in silence. Describe the behaviour and the habitat and the generator turns them into traits.

Beasts have Intelligence 2 or 3 and no languages. If you want a clever or magical animal, it is probably a monstrosity or a fey creature instead, and you can say so in your description.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a beast in D&D 5e?

Beasts are non-humanoid creatures that are a natural part of the world: animals and their giant versions. They have no innate magic and usually an Intelligence of 2 or 3.

Can druids Wild Shape into generated beasts?

Yes, if the DM allows it. Wild Shape works on any beast within the druid’s CR and movement limits, so a generated beast with the right CR and speeds is a valid form.

What CR beast makes a good ranger companion or mount?

Companions and mounts are usually CR 1/4 to 1/2 at low levels. Generate one at that CR and describe its temperament and role.

Can I make giant or dire versions of real animals?

Yes. Ask for “a giant badger” or “a dire elk” and set the CR; the generator raises size, hit dice and damage to match.

Is the beast generator free?

Yes. No sign-up is needed for a few free generations a day; a free account removes that wall and lets you save.
