What is the Aberration Generator?

This free aberration generator creates eldritch 5e monsters — tentacled schemers, Far Realm intruders, things that whisper — with a full stat block at the CR you pick. Aberrations usually get telepathy, odd senses such as blindsight, psychic attacks and abilities that target Wisdom or Intelligence saves, plus artwork and lore about where they came from. Free and no account required.

Borrowed Voices. The polyp can mimic the voice of any creature that has died within 1 mile of it. A creature that hears the mimicry can tell it is false with a successful DC 13 Wisdom (Insight) check.

Actions

Multiattack. The polyp makes two Tendril attacks.

Tendril. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d6 + 1) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 11).

Drowned Hymn (Recharge 5–6). Each creature within 30 feet of the polyp that can hear it must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 10 (3d6) psychic damage and can’t take reactions until the end of its next turn. On a success, it takes half as much damage.

Choir polyps cling to wreck-hulls and sea caves and call to sailors in the voices of crewmates they have already lost. Each new voice is a new mouth in the colony.

Aberration design tips

Aberrations are the monsters that break the rules of the world. They are the right choice when you want the party to feel out of their depth: they see without eyes, speak without mouths and attack the mind as well as the body.

Psychic damage and Wisdom or Intelligence saving throws are the signature of the type. Use them sparingly at low levels — a frightened or stunned character loses their turn, which is memorable once and frustrating three times.

Describe the wrongness rather than the anatomy: “a choir of polyps that sings in the voices of the drowned” gives the generator a theme for its traits, actions and lore.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a monster an aberration in 5e?

Aberrations are utterly alien beings, often from the Far Realm or deep underground. They tend to have telepathy, unusual senses, psychic attacks and powers that affect the mind.

Are aberrations too hard for low-level parties?

Not if the CR fits. Keep stuns and mind control off low-CR aberrations, or give them a recharge so they can’t use them every round. A CR 1–2 aberration is a good first taste of eldritch horror for a level 2–3 party.

Can I make a mind flayer-style villain?

Yes. Describe your own psionic schemer and its goals; the generator gives it psychic attacks, telepathy and lore without copying any specific creature.

Does the generator add psychic damage?

When it fits the creature. Most generated aberrations have at least one psychic or mind-affecting ability, usually against a Wisdom or Intelligence save.

Is it free?

Yes. No account is needed, with a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep generating and save results.
