How dwarf names work

Dwarven names are short and percussive. One or two syllables, heavy on k, g, d, r and th, with rolling double consonants: Thorin, Gimli, Bruenor, Dagnal. Female dwarf names share the same stone-cut sound and are usually only told apart by convention within the clan, which is exactly how a dwarf would want it.

Every dwarf carries a clan name, and in D&D these are usually translated into Common as compound words that record a deed or a trade: Battlehammer, Ironfist, Fireforge, Loderr, Brawnanvil. A dwarf gives their clan name before their own in formal company. Hill dwarves favour softer, earthier compounds; mountain dwarves and duergar favour metal and war.

Add world flavour such as "exiled clan" or "sea-trading dwarves" to shift the compounds. For a dwarf who has turned their back on the clan, roll a first name only and let the missing clan name be part of the story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do dwarf names all sound similar?

Dwarven culture values continuity, so names reuse a small set of hard sounds and clan compounds. If you want more variety, add flavour like "hill dwarf" or "coastal clan" to the world box.

Can I get a dwarven clan name on its own?

Every result includes a clan name. Copy just the second word if you only need the clan, or ask for "a dwarven clan with no first names" in the flavour box.

Are duergar names different?

Yes. Type "duergar" in the world flavour box and the generator drops the warm compounds for colder, more severe forms suited to the Underdark.

Build on the name
