What is the free D&D NPC generator?
LoreKeeper’s NPC & Character Generator is a free D&D 5e character maker. Describe anyone in a sentence — a tavern keeper, a villain, a hero for your next campaign — and in about 30 seconds you get a portrait, a name, race and class, a 5e stat line (ability scores, Armor Class, hit points, speed, proficiencies and equipment), a backstory, personality traits, ideals, bonds and flaws, and lines to say at the table. No account is needed to try it.
Characters your players will remember
Most NPCs only need three things to come alive: a look, a want and a voice. The generator gives you all three, plus the numbers for when the conversation turns into a fight, so you can drop a character into a session without stopping to prep.
Use it for the people your players will actually meet — innkeepers, guards, merchants, nobles, quest givers — and for the ones they will remember: villains, rivals and the old friend with a secret. Each page below starts the generator on one of those roles and shows a worked example.
It works for player characters too. Describe a concept and you get a starting point for a backstory and a set of ability scores to adjust to your table’s method. With a free LoreKeeper account, saved characters can talk: chat with them in character, in your world, with their history intact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the D&D NPC generator free?
Yes. You can generate characters without an account, with a small free allowance each day. A free LoreKeeper account lets you keep going, save characters and chat with them.
What does a generated character include?
A portrait, name, race, class and level, appearance, backstory, personality trait, ideal, bond and flaw, roleplay quotes, and a 5e stat line with ability scores, Armor Class, hit points, speed, proficiencies and equipment.
How do I make a memorable NPC quickly?
Give them one visible detail, one thing they want and one way of speaking. A limp, a debt and a habit of answering questions with questions is enough for a whole session. The generator gives you all three in every result.
What stats should an NPC have in 5e?
Most NPCs never fight, so a commoner’s numbers are fine. For NPCs who might, use an SRD stat block close to their role: Guard (CR 1/8) for watchmen, Bandit Captain (CR 2) for gang leaders, Priest (CR 2) for temple clerics, Veteran (CR 3) for retired soldiers and Mage (CR 6) for court wizards. Each sample on this site names the closest one.
Can I use it to make a player character?
Yes. Describe your concept and use the result as a starting point. Adjust the ability scores to your table’s method (standard array, point buy or rolled) and level.
What races and classes does it support?
All the common D&D races — human, elf, dwarf, halfling, gnome, half-elf, half-orc, tiefling, dragonborn and more — and every class, plus anything you describe yourself.
Can I use generated NPCs in Roll20, Foundry VTT or D&D Beyond?
Yes. Copy the stat line and description into a Roll20 or Foundry VTT NPC sheet or a D&D Beyond homebrew entry, use the portrait as a token, or download a PDF to print.
Can I talk to the characters I generate?
With a free LoreKeeper account, yes. Save the character to your world and chat with them in character; they know your world’s lore and can read their lines aloud.
