What is the Tavern Keeper NPC Generator?

This free tavern keeper generator creates a D&D innkeeper NPC in about 30 seconds: a portrait, name and race, how they run their inn, a personality with trait, ideal, bond and flaw, a rumour or quest hook to hand the party, roleplay quotes and a 5e stat line in case the bar fight gets serious. No account needed.

Example NPC: Greta Underbough

Tall and square-shouldered, flour to the elbows, with a ledger tucked in her apron and a cudgel behind the bar.

Remembers every customer’s drink and every customer’s debt.

Order. Her house, her rules, no exceptions — not even for the baron.

Tavern Keeper NPC tips for the table

The tavern keeper is the most-visited NPC in most campaigns, which makes them the cheapest place to make a world feel alive. A good one knows everyone, hears everything and wants something — usually money, sometimes quiet, occasionally revenge.

Describe the inn as well as the person: “a retired pirate who runs a dockside inn and waters the rum” tells the generator about the clientele, the rumours and the trouble that comes through the door.

Every tavern keeper comes with a hook. Hand it over when the party asks “heard anything interesting?” and you have an adventure without having planned one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a memorable tavern keeper?

Give them a rule of the house, a rumour and a secret. The rule shows their personality, the rumour gives the party somewhere to go, and the secret pays off when they come back.

What stats should an innkeeper have in 5e?

Most innkeepers can use the Commoner stat block. One who keeps order in a rough inn suits the Bandit or Thug stat block (CR 1/8 or 1/2) with a cudgel.

Does the generator name the tavern too?

Usually, yes. Mention the inn in your description and the result names it and describes its clientele. For more inn names, see the free fantasy name generator and the 50 tavern names list.

Can I generate rumours with the tavern keeper?

Every result includes a hook you can use as a rumour. Save the innkeeper to a free LoreKeeper world and ask Lore Assist for more rumours tied to your setting.

Is the tavern keeper generator free?

Yes. No account is needed, within a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep going and save.
