What is the D&D Rogue Generator?

This free D&D rogue generator creates thief, spy, fence and assassin NPCs or player characters in about 30 seconds: a portrait, name and race, guild ties and speciality, a personality with trait, ideal, bond and flaw, a job to offer the party, roleplay quotes and a 5e stat line. No account needed.

Example NPC: Nim “Two-Locks” Halloran

A character made with this generator, with a 5e stat line and the closest SRD stat block to run them with.

Nim “Two-Locks” Halloran

Half-elf · Spy and information broker · chaotic neutral

“Everything’s for sale. The question is whether you can afford to know who bought it.”

Appearance

Forgettable on purpose: brown coat, brown hair, a face you could describe to the watch and still not find.

Mannerism

Picks the lock on anything he is handed, including things that aren’t locked.

Personality trait

Never sits with his back to a door, and always knows where the second exit is.

Ideal

Freedom. Nobody owns Nim, not the guild, not the crown.

Bond

Owes his life to an old fence who is now in the baron’s prison.

Flaw

Sells the same secret twice whenever the price is right.

Quest hook

Nim offers the party a map of the baron’s prison in exchange for breaking his old mentor out — and he has already sold the same map to the baron.

Secret

He is the guild’s mole inside the city watch, and the watch knows.

D&D Rogue tips for the table

Rogue NPCs are the party’s contacts, competitors and betrayers. They know where the bodies are buried because they buried some of them.

Describe their speciality — burglar, con artist, information broker, assassin — and who they answer to. The generator builds their network and their price.

Every rogue comes with a job and a secret. The job is how they meet the party; the secret is why it will go wrong.

Give them a place on the map

The free map generator draws their tavern, town or keep, and a free account lets you pin them to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What stats should a rogue NPC have?

Use the SRD Spy (CR 1) for informants and burglars, Bandit Captain (CR 2) for gang leaders and Assassin (CR 8) for professional killers.

How do I use a rogue NPC in my campaign?

Make them a contact first: someone who sells information, fences loot or offers jobs. Once the party relies on them, their secret becomes a plot twist.

Can I generate a thieves’ guild?

Generate the guild master and a few members, mentioning the guild in each description. Save them to a free LoreKeeper world to keep the network together.

Can I make a rogue player character with it?

Yes. Use the backstory, personality and contacts as a starting point and build the class with your table’s rules.

Is the rogue generator free?

Yes. No account is needed for a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep going and save.
