What is the Cleric & Priest Generator?

This free D&D cleric generator creates priest and temple NPCs or player characters in about 30 seconds: a portrait, name and race, their deity and doctrine, a personality with trait, ideal, bond and flaw, a hook tied to the temple, roleplay quotes and a 5e stat line. No account needed.

Example NPC: Brother Anselm Coyle

A character made with this generator, with a 5e stat line and the closest SRD stat block to run them with.

Brother Anselm Coyle

Dwarf · Priest of the Lantern, keeper of the mountain shrine · lawful good

“The Lantern doesn’t ask what you’ve done. It just asks you to keep walking.”

Appearance

Bald, bearded to the belt, wearing a chain shirt under his vestments and a brass lantern that never goes out.

Mannerism

Raises the lantern to look at people’s faces when they speak.

Personality trait

Blesses everyone he meets, including people who are robbing him.

Ideal

Charity. Light is for sharing; a lantern kept to yourself is just a fire.

Bond

Swore to keep the shrine lantern burning until the lost miners come home.

Flaw

Believes the miners are alive, against all evidence, and will risk anyone to prove it.

Quest hook

Forty years after the mine collapsed, someone is knocking from inside the sealed tunnel.

Secret

He sealed the tunnel himself, on the order of the mine owners, with the miners still inside.

Cleric & Priest tips for the table

Temple NPCs are where parties go for healing, answers and resurrection, so they are a natural place to put both help and complications.

Describe the faith as well as the priest — “a priest of a harvest god in a town where nothing has grown for three years” — and the generator builds the doctrine, the doubt and the hook.

Use your own pantheon or a generic one. The generator invents a deity that fits your description if you don’t name one.

Give them a place on the map

The free map generator draws their tavern, town or keep, and a free account lets you pin them to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What stats should a priest NPC have in 5e?

The SRD Priest (CR 2) suits a temple cleric with real power: AC 13, 27 hit points and 5th-level spellcasting. For a junior cleric use the Acolyte (CR 1/4).

How do I make temple NPCs interesting?

Give the faith something it needs from the party and the priest something they doubt. Help with strings attached makes a better scene than a price list for healing.

Can I generate a cleric player character?

Yes. Describe your concept and deity and use the backstory and personality as a starting point for your character.

Does the generator invent deities?

If you don’t name one, yes. It creates a deity and doctrine that fit your description, which you can save to a free LoreKeeper world as part of your pantheon.

Is the cleric generator free?

Yes. No account is required, within a small daily allowance. Sign up free to keep going.
