What is the D&D Wizard Generator?

This free D&D wizard generator creates mage and spellcaster NPCs or player characters in about 30 seconds: a portrait, name and race, school of magic, what they are researching, a personality with trait, ideal, bond and flaw, roleplay quotes and a 5e stat line. No account needed.

Example NPC: Magister Odile Fenwright

A character made with this generator, with a 5e stat line and the closest SRD stat block to run them with.

D&D Wizard tips for the table

Wizards in a campaign are rarely just a stat block; they are a source of knowledge, a patron, a rival or a disaster waiting to happen. Every generated wizard has a project, because a wizard with a project is a wizard with a plot hook.

Name the school or the obsession in your description — “an illusionist who can no longer tell which of her memories are real” — and the generator builds the character around it.

For a wizard who will fight, the SRD Mage stat block (CR 6) is a strong default; an apprentice or hedge wizard is better served by something gentler and a single trick.

Give them a place on the map

The free map generator draws their tavern, town or keep, and a free account lets you pin them to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What stats should a wizard NPC have in 5e?

The SRD Mage stat block (CR 6) suits a full wizard: AC 12 (15 with mage armor), 40 hit points and 9th-level spellcasting. An Archmage is CR 12. For an apprentice, use a Commoner with one cantrip.

How do I make a wizard NPC interesting?

Give them a research project that could go wrong, a rival and a price for their help. The generator includes all three.

Can I generate a wizard player character?

Yes. Describe your concept and use the backstory and personality as a starting point, then build the class levels and spells with your table’s rules.

Does it work for sorcerers, warlocks and other casters?

Yes. Describe a sorcerer, warlock, druid or any spellcaster and the result follows that class and its source of magic.

Is the wizard generator free?

Yes. No account is required, within a small daily allowance. Sign up free to keep going and save.
