What is the Quest Giver NPC Generator?

This free quest giver generator creates a D&D NPC with an adventure attached in about 30 seconds: a portrait, name and race, the problem they need solved, what they offer, the complication they are hiding, a personality with trait, ideal, bond and flaw, roleplay quotes and a 5e stat line. No account needed.

Example NPC: Captain (ret.) Hesketh Marrow

A character made with this generator, with a 5e stat line and the closest SRD stat block to run them with.

Captain (ret.) Hesketh Marrow

Human · Retired mercenary captain, now a toll-keeper · neutral good

“Twelve of them walked into Blackfen. None walked out. I want to know why — and I want to pay you to find out.”

Appearance

One-eyed, weather-beaten and missing two fingers, still wearing the faded sash of the Grey Lanterns company.

Mannerism

Salutes people he respects, out of thirty years of habit.

Personality trait

Speaks in short orders, then apologises for it.

Ideal

Loyalty. You don’t leave your people behind, even when they leave you.

Bond

His old company is the only family he has.

Flaw

Drinks to forget the last campaign, and forgets important things.

Quest hook

His old company marched into the Blackfen to hunt a monster and never returned. He offers his pension — 200 gp — to anyone who brings back word.

He was meant to lead them. He stayed behind, drunk, and let his lieutenant go in his place.

Quest Giver NPC tips for the table

A quest is a person with a problem. The generator starts from the person, so the quest comes with motive and emotion instead of a notice-board line.

Every quest giver has a complication — the reward is stolen, the monster is their child, the map is wrong — so the adventure has a turn built in.

Describe the situation or the place and let the generator decide who walks up to the party with a job.

Give them a place on the map

The free map generator draws their tavern, town or keep, and a free account lets you pin them to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I write a good quest hook?

Start with a person who needs something urgently, offer a reward that matters to the party, and hide one complication the quest giver doesn’t know or won’t say. The generator builds all three into every result.

How much gold should a quest reward be?

A common rule of thumb for 5e is tens of gold pieces for a tier-one errand and hundreds for a dangerous tier-one quest, rising to thousands by tier two. Match the reward to the risk and to what the quest giver can plausibly afford.

Can I generate a quest without a specific NPC in mind?

Yes. Describe the place or situation — “a town where the bells won’t stop ringing” — and the generator decides who brings the party the job.

Can I build a whole adventure from the hook?

Save the quest giver to a free LoreKeeper world and use the free monster and map generators for the encounter and the location.

Is the quest giver generator free?

Yes. No account is required for a small daily allowance. Sign up free to keep going.
