What is the Elf NPC Generator?

This free elf NPC generator creates D&D elf characters — high elves, wood elves, drow or your own kind — in about 30 seconds: a portrait, name and lineage, a personality with trait, ideal, bond and flaw, centuries of backstory, a hook, roleplay quotes and a 5e stat line with darkvision and the elf’s keen senses. Works for NPCs and player characters. No account needed.

Example NPC: Ilvaris Thorne

A character made with this generator, with a 5e stat line and the closest SRD stat block to run them with.

Ilvaris Thorne

Wood elf · Warden of the Greywood · neutral good

“I fought in that war. Your book is wrong about who started it.”

Appearance

Lean and moss-coloured, bow unstrung across his back, with a ring of bark grown around one finger.

Mannerism

Stops mid-sentence to listen to birds, then carries on.

Personality trait

Talks about events from three centuries ago as if they were last week.

Ideal

Patience. The forest outlives every crown; so can he.

Bond

The Greywood’s heart-tree, which he planted as a boy.

Flaw

Thinks of humans as children and lets them know it.

Quest hook

Loggers have reached the heart-tree, and Ilvaris asks the party to talk to them before he stops talking.

The heart-tree is dying, and only Ilvaris knows the loggers are not the reason.

Elf NPC tips for the table

An elf can be several hundred years old, which means they remember things the party has only read about. The most interesting elf NPCs use that: they knew the villain’s grandmother, they fought in the war the history books got wrong.

Name the lineage and the role — “a wood elf warden who has guarded the same tree for four hundred years” — and the generator builds the history around it.

For elf names on their own, the free elf name generator rolls ten at a time with meanings and family names.

Give them a place on the map

The free map generator draws their tavern, town or keep, and a free account lets you pin them to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are elf traits in 5e?

Elves have darkvision to 60 feet, proficiency in Perception, advantage on saves against being charmed, immunity to magical sleep, and Trance, meditating for 4 hours instead of sleeping. Wood elves have a 35-foot walking speed in the 2014 rules.

How old are elves in D&D?

Elves reach adulthood around 100 and can live to about 750 years, so an elf NPC may remember events several human generations ago.

Can I generate drow or other elf lineages?

Yes. Ask for a drow, high elf, wood elf, sea elf or your own setting’s elves and the result follows that culture.

Can I generate elf names only?

Yes. The free elf name generator rolls ten elven names at a time with meanings and family names.

Is the elf NPC generator free?

Yes. No account is needed for a small daily allowance. Sign up free to keep going and save.
