What is the Town Guard NPC Generator?

This free town guard generator creates D&D watchmen, gate guards, jailers and sergeants in about 30 seconds: a portrait, name and race, their post and loyalties, a personality with trait, ideal, bond and flaw, what it takes to get past them, roleplay quotes and a 5e stat line based on the Guard stat block. No account needed.

A character made with this generator, with a 5e stat line and the closest SRD stat block to run them with.

Sergeant Dunstan Pike

Human · Sergeant of the North Gate watch · lawful neutral

“Article nine, paragraph two: no entry after dusk. Unless you’ve got a writ. Have you got a writ?”

Appearance

Barrel-chested, moustache waxed to points, chain shirt polished for inspections that never come.

Mannerism

Writes everyone’s name in a little book, misspelled.

Personality trait

Quotes the city charter by article and paragraph.

Ideal

Rules. The gate stays shut after dusk because the rules say so.

Bond

His daughter is a cadet in the watch, and he’d do anything to keep her off the night shift.

Flaw

Can be talked into anything that sounds like proper procedure.

Quest hook

Every night for a week, a cart has left by the North Gate with a valid writ signed by a councillor who has been dead for a month.

Secret

He has been letting the carts through because the writ also carries a purse.

Town Guard NPC tips for the table

Guards are the NPCs the party argues with most. A named guard with a personality turns a blocked gate into a negotiation, a bribe or a friendship that pays off later.

Describe the post and the mood of the town — “a gate guard in a city under quarantine” — and the generator works out what the guard wants, fears and will accept.

Every guard comes with a hook: something they saw on their shift that they shouldn’t have.

Give them a place on the map

The free map generator draws their tavern, town or keep, and a free account lets you pin them to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the stats for a town guard in 5e?

The SRD Guard is CR 1/8 (25 XP) with AC 16 (chain shirt and shield), 11 hit points (2d8 + 2), a spear attack at +3 to hit and Perception +2. A guard captain or sergeant suits the Veteran (CR 3).

How do I handle the party bribing guards?

Decide what the guard wants — money, a favour, a story, to get home on time — and what they fear. The generator gives every guard both, so bribes become roleplay rather than a Persuasion roll.

Can I generate a whole watch patrol?

Generate the sergeant as a full character and use plain Guard stat blocks for the rest, or generate two or three with different personalities for a patrol the party will remember.

Can guards be quest givers?

Often the best ones. Every generated guard has seen something on shift — use it as a hook.

Is the town guard generator free?

Yes. No sign-up is needed for a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep going and save.
