Three Hammers Rest

the tavern beneath the iron vein

You step down from the carved stone stair into a low-ceilinged hall lit by braziers set into iron sconces. The air smells of roasting root, hot metal and the faint tang of ore; every surface is dressed in worked stone and burnished iron—benches with rivets, tables rimmed in hammered steel, a carved dwarven frieze running the length of the room. Conversation is polite and measured; laughter is the measured kind that follows a clever trade or a successful claim. Miners in soot-flecked mail trade quiet jokes with guildmen in clipped cloaks. The hearth holds a slow, steady flame under a massive iron hood—behind it, a rack of smoked meats and a display of bottled vintages in a stone alcove labeled with house marks and years.

Over the door

A heavy iron disk hung from two chained hammers, burnished to a dull glow; the metal bears three punched hammer-marks and a faint rune of welcome. The chains show old scorch and soot, the disk wobbles when the wind of the halls passes.

The keeper

Borun Anvilmar

Dwarf

Manner

Borun runs the Rest with the careful pride of a master-forger: everything has its place, every guest is measured for what they brought and what they might owe. He speaks softly but firmly, settling disputes with a raised brow and a ledger tap, and greets regulars with the same nod he gives visiting magistrates.

Quirk

Borun taps his hammer-shaped signet against the bar whenever he’s thinking, a short triple knock that punctuates conversations.

Stats

Use the Veteran stat block; AC 17 (scale), wields a stout warhammer, keeps a hidden iron key and a hand-forged dagger behind the bar.
House special

Anvil Ember

5 sp

A small measure of warmed basalt whiskey sweetened with a drop of honeyed ore-syrup—it leaves a pleasant heat in the chest and grants +1 to saving throws vs. fear for the next hour as you feel bolstered by ancestral resolve.

Regulars

Durgan Fettleshield

A mine foreman who collects stories of vein-strikes and would pay well for proof of a living ore seam.

Kestrel Ironmark

A marble-eyed guild appraiser who snoops ledgers and auctions for rare metals and has been asking after a missing Veinheart talisman.

Old Halrun

An ex-guard who mutters about a collapsed waystone near the Deep Gate and keeps a map with a rust-stained 'X'.

Rumours
  1. 1

Durgan Fettleshield says the southern shaft opened on a blind pocket last week and something screamed from the ore—he's hiring hands to clear a blocked vein.

  2. 2

Kestrel Ironmark whispers that a small rune-marked anvil, stamped with the Veinheart sigil, vanished from the guild vault and may have been sold to a collector near the Silver Gate market.

  3. 3

Old Halrun swears the waystone by the Deep Gate still holds a warm pulse beneath the rubble; he offers a map and will pay a share if the pulse can be reached and its source identified.

Look out for
An iron-bound ledger behind the bar lists debts and favors; marks in the ledger can be called in for assistance or trouble.A shallow, ember-warmed trough runs under the bar to keep tankards hot and to test coins—Borun weighs a coin with a brass hook before accepting unusual metal.
