The Hearthmoss Hollow

the inn beneath the sleeping ember

Steam curls from shallow basins sunk into flagstones; mica veins in the cavern walls catch the light and scatter it like a faint morning. The main room is low-roofed and warm from a sleeping fire spirit beneath the floor — you feel the heat through your boots and smell mineral-rich water and herb-smoke. Patrons lounge on thick moss-wrapped benches and in alcoves warmed by heated stones; towels and steaming mugs are offered on arrival. Conversation moves at a comfortable, hushed pace: laughter, a low lute, the clink of ceramic cups, and the distant, contented susurrus that might be the spirit turning in its dream.

Over the door

A round iron hoop hung with a sheet of hammered copper depicting a stylized ember curled like an eye; steam darkens the metal and a small ring of moss is stitched into the rim. The copper is dull at the edges but the ember is polished bright from years of hands touching it.

The keeper

Brenn Thal

Dwarf

Manner

Brenn runs the Hollow like tending a hearth: practical, quietly solicitous, and impatient with needless worry. He treats newcomers with cautious warmth and expects them to follow the house rhythms — a soak, a meal, a coin — but will silently arrange help for those who earn his trust.

Quirk

Brenn polishes the copper ember on the sign obsessively between customers, as if checking the spirit's mood by the metal's shine.

Stats

Use the Veteran stat block; AC 16 (studded leather), wields a heavy poker (counts as club); knows basic lore about fire spirits and where miners tunnel in the caverns.
House special

Embercup

5 sp

A small cup of spiced hearthwine poured over a sliver of warm emberstone; it leaves a pleasant flush and a fleeting sense of being braced against cold — grants advantage on one Constitution save made within the hour (trace warmth remains but can start mild cravings for heat).

Staff

Motti · cook

A squat rock-gnome who seasons everything with pickled root and hot-spring broth; hums tunelessly while ladling food from a wide iron cauldron.

Halla · barmaid

A lean human who moves like steam, balancing steam-bowls and mugs with a smile and good directions to the warmest alcoves.

Regulars

Professor Denvic Mire

A wide-eyed halfling mineralogist cataloguing hot-spring deposits who wants the original anchoring charm to study its sigils.

Old Kest

A retired salamander-tamer with soot-streaked skin who keeps an eye on the floor grates and mutters if strangers linger near them.

'Blue' Jorun

A taciturn miner with a sharded amulet who comes for the steam and asks few questions; he sometimes slips Brenn folded notes about 'the fissure'.

Rumours
  1. 1

Professor Denvic claims the 'bright sigil' charm taken from a collapsed vein is now in the vault of Lord Harbren in Deepcut — he wants it returned to study how it binds spirits.

  2. 2

A collapsed tunnel called the Glass Fissure downriver is singing at night; Blue Jorun says something below has been tapping a rhythm that rattles miners' tools.

  3. 3

Travelers whisper of a wandering salamander, the 'Glassback', that bears a scale the color of living ember and has been seen near the old anchorstone — hunters and collectors seek it.

Look out for
Heated foot basins: a short soak restores 1d4 HP (house rule once per long rest).Low stone grates and carved vents show faint runes — the floor conceals access to the spirit's chamber (locked and warded).
