Ledger & Sluice
the ledger beneath the city's drains
You climb down a slick iron ladder and step into a low-ceilinged corridor of brick and slime. Oil lamps in overturned jars throw guttering light; the air smells of stale ale, wet stone and something sweeter — old secrets. Tables are mismatched barrels and boards, floors are damp, and rats slip between legs with practiced indifference. Voices are low: deals whispered, names traded for coins, scraps of city gossip tossed around like playthings. An iron-barred alcove behind the counter hides a stacked collection of folded papers and tin boxes, watched by a pair of beady eyes.
A rusted iron rectangle hung by a chain, etched with a crossed quill and sewer grate; the paint flaking away leaves only a dark smear where letters once were.

Stats
Mudledger Sling
4 cpA shot of sour spirit stirred with a scrap of preserved citrus; it takes the edge off fear and sharpens the memory of a whispered name for 1 hour (advantage on Recall Knowledge checks about people or deals once).
Poor (5e lifestyle: about 2 sp a day)
Nib · barmaid
Small, sharp-eared, and skittish, she serves drinks with a sidelong wink while slipping folded notes under tankards for the right price.
Grimtooth · bouncer
A burly wererat in a stained coat who keeps the door and the rat tunnels clear with a menacing grin and a hooked staff.
Old Kest
A once-respected cartographer reduced to selling illegal sewer maps; he wants a map fragment he says was stolen by a 'water-sprite' at the Old Quay.
Bellar of the Watch
A disgraced constable who slips into the Sluice for leads; Bellar wants proof linking Aldermouth's Dockmaster to the missing shipment.
Siv the Pincher
A nimble pickpocket who trades names for alms and is hunting a well-locked pocketbook rumored to contain a traitor's sigil.
1
A ledger stamped with the Dockmaster's seal was seen in a locked chest beneath the Old Quay warehouses; whoever opens it will find names and dates tied to the missing shipment.
2
There is a hidden gallery of carved stone faces in the Rat Warrens; Old Kest claims one face conceals a map fragment to a dry cistern full of coin.
3
Constable Jorren has been bribing a member of the City Council; a coded letter addressed to 'The Lanternmaker' is said to be the proof and it was last spotted in the Watchhouse records room.
