The Whiskered Ledger
a drainside den of whispered debts
Low, yellowed lanterns burn in jars along slime-dark beams; the air is warm with steam, sour with old ale and the tang of spoiled cheese. Conversation slinks in the corners—half-sighed bargains, names traded like coin—while the floor is a patchwork of planks and crates above reeking water. Rats glance from under tables, and small, quick hands slide folded notes across the bar as often as mugs. The clientele is a mix of ragged city urchins, hose-headed smugglers, and officials who prefer their secrets damp and untraceable.
A rusted iron ring hung from a length of sewer chain; painted on the disc is a stylized rat nibbling a quill. The paint is flaking and there is an old blot of ink across the quill.
