Soot, Steam & Silence
the inn at the heart of the warm cavern
You push through a low, stone arch and are met by soft steam and the hollow hush of water against rock. Heat blooms from a basin sunk into the flagstones; lantern light trembles on wet surfaces and the air smells of soot, rosemary and faint brimstone. Conversation is muted — people lean close as if to keep the warmth from escaping — while a few patrons soak on wooden benches beside the hot-spring pools. The common room is built around the sleeping hearth: a shallow pit of black glassy coals ringed with rune-etched tiles, its heat spreading through the floor and the inn’s low timber beds. Little talismans of beaten copper and carved bone hang from the beams, clinking softly with every footstep.
A round iron hoop hangs above the lintel, from which a soot-black slate is suspended by chains; a simple incised emblem of a curled ember over three wavy lines is worn smooth by steam, no words.

Ember-sigh
5 spA small glass of warmed fortified wine steeped with a pinch of smoked mineral salt; it leaves a pleasant flush and a momentary glow beneath the skin like a memory of warmth (while it’s in effect, the drinker gains advantage on one check to resist cold and on one Constitution saving throw taken within the hour).
Comfortable (5e lifestyle: about 2 gp a day)
Merri Coalhand · cook
A squat, cheerful halfling who seasons everything with crushed mineral salts from the spring; she hums as she works and insists 'hot food cures cold bones.'
Torin Brakes · barmaid
A long-armed dwarf who delivers steaming mugs and towels with iron efficiency and an unexpected dry wit.
Korin the Mole
A blind ex-miner who maps old veins and tunnels with uncanny memory; he wants someone to fetch a rusted iron key from a collapsed shaft.
Sivra Quench
A retired scryer who pays in whispered gossip and asks patrons about any strange heat-songs she can’t quite recall.
Gavel the Quiet
A broad-shouldered, near-silent mercenary who keeps a list of people who owe him favors and is always nursing a single cup of wine.
1
Korin the Mole claims there is a sealed steam gate under the western baths labeled with ash-runes; he thinks an iron key with a shell-mark unlocks it.
2
Sivra Quench whispers that the sleeping fire spirit beneath the inn once kept a rival spirit bound in a nearby fissure; the fissure’s mouth is now marked by a carved basalt totem.
3
A merchant caravan led by Vara Coldmark paid Brenk in secrecy to slow the spring’s heat last month — they were reportedly hunting a heat-singer named 'Old Hest', who is said to answer any ash-chant.
