The Lantern Below
the cellar of forgotten echoes
You descend a narrow spiral stair into cool, stale air that smells of old candlewax, wet stone, and something faintly mineral — like iron left too long in water. Low lantern light pools in pockets; shadows cling to alcoves and a battered wooden bar sits opposite a patchwork of benches. Drips echo from somewhere deeper, and the murmur of voices is less a conversation than the sound of people listening for something beneath the floor. The crowd is thin and watchful: small-figured miners with glove-scarred hands, a scholar who keeps her notes on a chained ledger, and a few hooded figures who speak in clipped noises. Rusted racks hold odd curios — a carved bone, a rusted key, a stone disk with a hole in the center — each labelled in a cramped hand. The room feels lived-in but reclaimed from abandonment, as if someone only yesterday decided this cellar should mean something again.
A rusted iron frame holds a soot-blackened glass lantern; the glass is cracked and scorched with faint rune scratches, the iron ring warped as if heat-twisted. No lettering, only a single thumbprint-shaped burn at the bottom.

Stats
Echo Lantern Ale
4 cpA cloudy, slightly smoky ale brewed with a bitter root; it sharpens hearing for an hour (advantage on Perception checks relying on sound once, then a -1 penalty to concentration for the next hour).

Breck · barmaid
A quick-handed halfling who knows every patron's favorite and the way out of the cellar without the lantern light.
Nella · cook
A gruff human who boils root stews in an iron cauldron and swears the best things hide under a crust of salt.
Grelm Ironpike
A grizzled dwarf prospector who wants the Blackroot Idol reclaimed for his clan, and will trade shovel-work for ale.

An anxious half-elf cartographer who collects fragments of underground plans and believes the Echo Vault connects to a lost sub-city.
Maris Vell
A former merchant captain turned relic-hunter, she looks for Captain Myr's Ledger — a ledger she claims lists safe passages under the stone.
1
Echo Vault: miners claim a hollowed chamber three shafts west of the Lantern Below rings with voices that mimic your name — Grelm insists the Blackroot Idol is inside.
2
Blackroot Idol: a carved totem stolen from a clan shrine, said to be cursed and to bloom black fungi wherever it rests — Grelm wants it returned to Ironpike Hold.
3
Captain Myr's Ledger: Maris Vell swears an old ledger kept by Captain Myr lists safe tunnels and one marked 'Silent Gate' that opens deeper into the sub-city; she will pay for any pages recovered.
