The Hollow Lantern
the abandoned lamp beneath the city
You duck through a low, crumbling arch and the Hollow Lantern breathes out a slow, cool draft. The main room is a cavernous cellar re-used as a tavern: flagstones slick with mineral film, timber supports scarred by old burns, and long tables scarred with names carved in hurried hands. Light is scant—the remaining lanterns glow a dim, yellow-green that seems to drink sound; whispers and the drip of distant water fill the spaces between sentences. Most of the furniture is warped or askew; crates and broken barrels have been repurposed into stools and shelves. A circular hatch in the far wall is barred and padlocked, and every so often someone drags a crate to it and listens as if expecting the walls to speak back. The crowd is a cautious one: a handful of spelunkers, a pale scholar with ink-stained fingers, and a molefolk prospector who won’t stop tracing the rune on the sign. Conversation hushes when a newcomer enters, not from rudeness but from habit—this place remembers those who pass through it. The smell is iron-and-earth heavy, interlaced with the comforting aroma of hot broth and burnt rootcakes that someone keeps stirring on a brazier.
A rust-pitted iron lantern hangs over a blackened stone arch; its glass panes are clouded with grime and a single stained wick is frozen mid-flicker. No words—only a faint rune scraped into the iron that catches the torchlight.

Stats
Lantern's Breath
5 spA bitter, warm brew spiked with phosphor-root that makes whispers linger a beat longer in your head; drinkers gain advantage on Perception checks that rely on sound for the next hour but suffer a -1 penalty to saving throws vs. fear while the aftertaste lingers.

Grit Underbrow
A molefolk prospector who wants funding to re-open a collapsed vein at the Black Spindle and pays in rumors.
Professor Havel Quern
An aging human scholar who studies echoes and keeps muttering about a living sound called the Echo-Swarm in the ventilation shafts.
Mira 'Two-Fingers' Oren
A quick-fingered fence who buys mirrored trinkets and will pay handsomely for glass shards from a shrine called the Glassed Well.
1
The Glassed Well: an underground shrine three tunnels east of the Lantern was sealed by the old miners; Mira Oren pays for any mirrored shard from inside.
2
Black Spindle vein: Grit Underbrow says an old collapsed vein reopened after the tremor; he needs a crew to clear the choke and claims there's blue pyrite worth a small fortune.
3
Echo-Swarm: Professor Quern insists a living chorus of insects and fungus—called the Echo-Swarm—has nested in Vent Shaft 7 and can be coaxed to sing memories back if you record its pattern.
