How human names work
Human names are the hardest to generate well because humans have no single naming convention. A good fantasy human name borrows the shape of a real-world culture without copying it: Norse-shaped names with hard k and r sounds, Romance-shaped names with flowing vowels, Arabic-shaped names with soft kh and -ah endings, or wholly invented ones for your own kingdoms.
That is why this generator leans on the world flavour box more than any other. Tell it "Calimshan trader", "Viking-inspired longship crew" or "rainy Victorian port" and the surnames will follow suit, from occupational names like Fletcher and Tanner to place-names like Ashford and Marren.
Each roll gives ten first-and-surname pairs with a short meaning. Use them for player characters, for the forty villagers you need before Saturday, or for the noble house that just rolled into town.
Got a name? Give it somewhere to live.
The free map generator draws the town, dungeon or region, and you can pin characters to it. Most people who start here end up there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pick a real-world culture for human names?
Yes. Write it in the world flavour box: "Norse", "Byzantine", "West African kingdom", "Edo-period". Names will follow that sound without reproducing real people's names.
Do human names come with surnames?
Every result is a first name and surname. Surnames follow the culture you describe, so a farming village gives occupational names and a court gives house names.
How do I name a whole village quickly?
Add the village description to the flavour box, roll three or four times, and download the PDF. Forty names takes about a minute.
Build on the name
Names are the first step. LoreKeeper's other free generators build the character, the creature and the place around them, and a free account keeps everything together in one world.
