How halfling names work

Halfling names are soft and friendly. First names are usually two syllables with gentle consonants and a bouncing rhythm: Milo, Rosie, Merric, Lidda, Perrin. They borrow heavily from English rural names, and a halfling name should feel like it belongs to someone who would offer you a second breakfast.

Family names are the fun part. They are almost always compound words tied to comfort, crops or craft: Brandybuck, Goodbarrel, Tealeaf, Underbough, Hilltopple, Greenbottle. Lightfoot halflings favour travel and river words; stouts favour hearth and stone words.

Add flavour such as "riverboat family" or "big-city halfling thieves" and the compounds adjust while keeping the warmth. Each result includes a meaning, which for halflings is usually a very literal one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are halfling names the same as hobbit names?

They share a rural English feel, but D&D halfling names are their own thing. Nothing here copies Tolkien's names; the generator writes new ones in the same spirit.

Do halflings use family names?

Yes, and they are proud of them. Every result includes a family name built from comfort, crop or craft words.

Can I get a nickname too?

Ask for "with a village nickname" in the flavour box and the meaning line will suggest one, such as Merric "Three-Pies" Goodbarrel.

Build on the name

Names are the first step. LoreKeeper's other free generators build the character, the creature and the place around them, and a free account keeps everything together in one world.
