How dark fantasy names work
Dark fantasy names work by contrast. The best ones sound almost noble, then turn: Lucien de Valmore sounds like a count until you learn what the valley is for. They use long vowels, sibilants and sudden hard consonants, with surnames that reference rot, iron, ash, hollow places and old wounds.
This generator is tuned for the grim end of the shelf: Ravenloft, Dark Souls, Berserk, the Witcher. It produces names for villains who believe they are right, for knights whose oaths have curdled, for witches of the fens and for the towns that stopped answering letters.
Add "plague city", "vampire court" or "fallen crusader order" to the flavour box to focus the result. Every name comes with a meaning written as a warning.
Got a name? Give it somewhere to live.
The free map generator draws the town, dungeon or region, and you can pin characters to it. Most people who start here end up there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use these for villains in a normal D&D game?
Yes. The names are tuned for menace but are still pronounceable at the table. Use the meaning line as the villain's first rumour.
Does this generate place names too?
Ask for "cursed villages" or "haunted keeps" in the flavour box and it will generate dark fantasy location names instead of characters.
How do I make a name feel gothic rather than just evil?
Gothic names keep a trace of nobility or faith. Add "fallen noble house" or "heretic order" and the generator leans on titles, honorifics and church words.
Build on the name
Names are the first step. LoreKeeper's other free generators build the character, the creature and the place around them, and a free account keeps everything together in one world.
