How gnome names work

Gnomes collect names the way they collect half-finished inventions. A gnome may have a dozen personal names from parents, aunts, clan elders and childhood friends, and will use whichever one suits the moment. The names themselves are light and quick, often three syllables with a skip in the middle: Alston, Boddynock, Fizwick, Zanna, Nissa.

Clan names are shorter and older: Beren, Daergel, Folkor, Garrick, Nackle, Murnig, Ningel, Scheppen, Timbers, Turen. Rock gnomes favour clan names tied to craft; forest gnomes favour ones tied to small animals and burrows. Nicknames are almost mandatory and are usually a small joke.

Roll with the flavour box blank for classic gnome names, or add "clockwork city" or "deep gnome svirfneblin" to shift the sound. Each result includes a meaning that often doubles as the nickname.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are gnome names so long?

Gnomes enjoy names and keep adding to them. The generator gives one personal name and one clan name; add "with nickname" for a third.

Do deep gnomes have different names?

Yes. Type "svirfneblin" or "deep gnome" in the flavour box and names shift to shorter, harder, more cautious forms.

Can I generate a gnome clan name only?

Copy the second word of any result, or ask for "gnome clan names" in the flavour box to get ten clan names with no personal names.

Build on the name

Names are the first step. LoreKeeper's other free generators build the character, the creature and the place around them, and a free account keeps everything together in one world.
