What is the Fantasy World Map Generator?

This free fantasy world map generator draws a realm or region for D&D. Describe the land — a frozen frontier, a kingdom split by a river, an archipelago of pirate isles — and in about a minute you get a parchment-style map with named mountains, forests, rivers, settlements and ruins, a key with a line on each place, travel hazards and the region’s history. No account needed.

Example map: The Realm of Aethelred and Beyond

What comes with the art: a key of named locations, hazards you can run and the history of the place.

The Realm of Aethelred and Beyond

Region · No grid (hex grid available for travel)

Example regional fantasy map made with the LoreKeeper map generator: a parchment-style realm with labelled mountains, forests, marshes, a walled fortress, rivers, ships and a compass rose
The Realm of Aethelred and Beyond: a regional map made with the free map generator.

A coastal realm between the Sea of Whispers and the Endless Steppe, held together by a mountain fortress and pulled apart by the free cities in the south-east.

Map key

  1. 1.The Hand of Gideon

A walled fortress around five standing stones in the Iron Peaks. Whoever holds it holds the mountain passes.

  2. 2.The Whispering Weald

An old forest whose trees are said to repeat what is said beneath them.

  3. 3.The Sunken Marshes

Fenland on the north coast, where an older city lies under the water.

  4. 4.The Free Cities Confederation

Merchant cities on the south-east coast that pay no taxes to the fortress and want to keep it that way.

  5. 5.Mushroom Jungle

A giant fungal forest in the south, home to things that are not quite plants.

Hazards

  • Mountain passes close with the first snow; crossing after that takes a DC 15 Wisdom (Survival) check per day.
  • The Sunken Marshes count as difficult terrain for overland travel.

History

Aethelred was one kingdom until the Free Cities stopped paying for the fortress that protected them. The fortress has not forgiven them.

Fantasy World Map tips

A region map is a campaign on one page. Every label is a rumour waiting to happen, so name the conflict as well as the geography — “a kingdom split by a river, with the old capital drowned in the middle” — and the generator puts the story on the map.

For overland travel, use a hex grid. In 5e a party travelling at a normal pace covers about 24 miles a day, so a few hexes of 6 miles each is a day’s journey.

With a free LoreKeeper account, the region becomes your world map: every named place becomes a location in your lore, and you can pin characters and monsters to it.

Fill it with monsters

The free monster generator makes the creatures that live there, with 5e stat blocks at the CR your party needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I generate a whole fantasy world map?

Yes. Choose Region and describe a continent, kingdom or world. The generator draws it and names the major places, with a line of lore for each.

What grid should I use for a world map?

A hex grid is the usual choice for overland travel. Many DMs use 6-mile hexes, since a 5e party at a normal pace covers about 24 miles a day.

How fast do characters travel overland in 5e?

At a normal pace, 3 miles an hour or 24 miles in an 8-hour day. A fast pace is 30 miles a day with a −5 penalty to passive Perception; a slow pace is 18 miles a day and allows stealth.

Does the region map name places?

Yes. Mountains, forests, rivers, settlements and ruins are named on the map and listed in a key with a short description of each.

Is the world map generator free?

Yes. No account is needed for a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep going and turn the map into your world map.
