What is the D&D Forest Map Generator?

This free forest map generator draws D&D wilderness battlemaps: forest clearings, woodland roads, river fords, overgrown ruins and campsites. Describe the scene and in about a minute you get a top-down map on a 5-foot or hex grid with trees for cover, undergrowth as difficult terrain, a key of named features, hazards and the history of the place. No account needed.

Example map: Hartshorn Ford

What comes with the art: a key of named locations, hazards you can run and the history of the place.

Hartshorn Ford

Battlemap (forest) · Square grid, 5 ft per square, 26 × 20 squares

A shallow river ford on a forest road, with a stand of old oaks on one bank and a bramble-choked ruin on the other.

Map key

  1. A.The Ford

Knee-deep water 20 feet wide. Difficult terrain; a creature knocked prone here is swept 10 feet downstream.

  2. B.Old Oaks

Each trunk gives half cover; the low branches can be climbed for a better shot.

  3. C.Bramble Ruin

A roofless chapel wall. Brambles are difficult terrain and deal 1 piercing damage per square moved.

  4. D.Forest Road

Muddy track through the trees; the party’s cart is stuck here.

Hazards

  • Dusk: the area is dim light, giving disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight for creatures without darkvision.
  • Slippery stones: a creature that Dashes through the ford must succeed on a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw or fall prone.

History

The chapel by the ford was raised to a hunting god whose herd of white harts still drinks here, and the wolves follow the harts.

D&D Forest Map tips

Most travel encounters happen somewhere green. A wilderness battlemap makes the forest part of the fight: trees give cover, undergrowth slows movement and a river or ravine splits the battlefield.

Describe the encounter as well as the place — “wolves ambush the party at a ford at dusk” — and the generator adds the features that matter.

For travel across a whole forest, use the region map instead and a hex grid; use this for the fights along the way.

Fill it with monsters

The free monster generator makes the creatures that live there, with 5e stat blocks at the CR your party needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does cover work with trees in 5e?

A tree trunk usually gives half cover (+2 to AC and Dexterity saves); a thick trunk or dense foliage can give three-quarters cover (+5). Undergrowth is typically difficult terrain.

Can I make a forest map with a hex grid?

Yes. Pick Hex grid before you forge. Hexes suit outdoor fights because diagonal movement is the same as straight movement.

What encounters suit a forest map?

Ambushes, chases, hunts and fey encounters. Use the free monster generator for beasts or fey at your party’s CR.

Can I generate a whole forest region instead?

Yes. Use the world and region map page for a whole forest with named landmarks, and this page for individual encounter sites.

Is the forest map generator free?

Yes. No account is needed for a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep going and save maps.
