What is the D&D Castle Map Generator?

This free castle map generator draws a D&D castle, keep or fortress. Describe it — a border keep under siege, a vampire’s ruined citadel, a royal palace — and in about a minute you get a top-down map with walls, towers, gatehouse, great hall and dungeons on a grid, a key of named rooms, defences and hazards, and the castle’s history. No account needed.

Example map: Greyhold Keep

What comes with the art: a key of named locations, hazards you can run and the history of the place.

Greyhold Keep

Dungeon (castle) · Square grid, 5 ft per square

A square border keep on a river crossing, curtain wall breached on the north side, held by thirty soldiers waiting for relief that is not coming.

Map key

  1. 1.Gatehouse

Twin towers, a portcullis and murder-holes. The winch room is on the first floor.

  2. 2.Bailey

Open yard with a well, a smithy and stables. Archers on the walls can see every square.

  3. 3.North Breach

A 15-foot gap in the curtain wall filled with rubble. Difficult terrain, half cover.

  4. 4.Great Hall

Long tables, a gallery above, and the lord’s chair. The garrison sleeps here now.

  5. 5.Undercroft

Cellars, the armoury and an old sally-port tunnel to the river that the garrison has forgotten.

Hazards

  • Murder-holes: creatures in the gate passage can be targeted from above with three-quarters cover for the attackers.
  • Collapsing breach: a creature that fails a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw while climbing the rubble slides back down and falls prone.

History

Greyhold was built to tax the river crossing and has changed hands four times. The current lord fled; the sergeant who stayed is in charge.

D&D Castle Map tips

Castles are dungeons that were built to keep people out, so the map should show how: a gatehouse, a killing ground, walls with towers and a keep as the last line.

Tell the generator whether the party is storming it, sneaking in or visiting as guests. A siege needs walls and gates; a heist needs servants’ passages and a vault; a ball needs a great hall and balconies.

For a castle with many floors, generate the ground floor first and then each tower or level as its own map.

Fill it with monsters

The free monster generator makes the creatures that live there, with 5e stat blocks at the CR your party needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I generate a castle with multiple floors?

Generate the ground floor first, then describe each tower, level or dungeon as its own map. Save them to a free LoreKeeper world to keep them together.

How do I run a castle siege in 5e?

Give the defenders cover (half or three-quarters behind battlements), make the walls and gate objects with AC and hit points, and let the party choose between storming the breach and sneaking in another way.

Can I make a ruined castle?

Yes. Describe the ruin and what lives there now; the map and the hazards will reflect collapsed sections and new inhabitants.

Does the castle map have a grid?

Yes, a square grid at 5 feet per square by default, or hex or no grid if you prefer. The grid can be toggled on the result.

Is the castle map generator free?

Yes. No account is needed for a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep going and save maps.
