What is the D&D Tavern Map Generator?

This free tavern map generator draws a top-down D&D inn or tavern on a 5-foot grid. Describe the place — a dockside dive, a coaching inn, a dwarven alehouse — and in about a minute you get a battlemap with the bar, tables, kitchen, cellar and rooms, a key of named features with cover for the inevitable brawl, hazards and the tavern’s history. No account needed.

Example map: The Drowned Lantern

What comes with the art: a key of named locations, hazards you can run and the history of the place.

The Drowned Lantern

Battlemap (tavern interior) · Square grid, 5 ft per square, 16 × 12 squares

A low-beamed dockside tavern on the river, half below street level, with a trapdoor in the cellar that opens straight onto the water.

Map key

  1. A.Taproom

Six tables and a long bench. Tables can be flipped for half cover (an action).

  2. B.Bar

Oak counter giving half cover; three-quarters if you crouch behind it. The keeper keeps a loaded crossbow under it.

  3. C.Snug

A curtained booth where deals are made. The curtain blocks line of sight.

  4. D.Cellar

Barrels, nets and a trapdoor to the river. A creature that drops through falls 10 feet into deep water.

  5. E.Gallery

Balcony 10 feet above the taproom. A creature can jump down to make an attack with advantage, then must succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check or fall prone.

Hazards

  • Spilled ale: squares by the bar are difficult terrain once a fight starts.
  • The lantern: hitting the hanging lantern (AC 12) drops burning oil in a 5-foot square, dealing 1d6 fire damage to anyone there.

History

The Drowned Lantern got its name when the river flooded and the landlord kept serving in waist-deep water. The trapdoor has been there longer than the tavern.

D&D Tavern Map tips

Taverns are where adventures start, where information changes hands and where fights break out over cards. A tavern map with real furniture turns that fight into something fun: tables to flip, a balcony to leap from, a chandelier to cut.

Describe the clientele as well as the building — “a smugglers’ tavern with a trapdoor to the river” — and the generator includes the secrets.

Pair it with the tavern keeper generator for the person behind the bar and the fantasy name generator for the sign over the door.

Fill it with monsters

The free monster generator makes the creatures that live there, with 5e stat blocks at the CR your party needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is a typical tavern battlemap?

A small tavern is about 12 by 10 squares (60 by 50 feet) at 5 feet per square; a large inn with a stable yard can be 30 squares across.

Does the tavern map include upstairs rooms?

Mention them in your description and the generator includes the gallery, guest rooms or cellar. For separate floors, generate each level as its own map.

How do I run a tavern brawl in 5e?

Use unarmed strikes and improvised weapons (1d4 damage), let players knock creatures out instead of killing them when they reduce them to 0 hit points with a melee attack, and give the room features to use: tables, a balcony, a chandelier.

Can I name the tavern too?

The generator names the tavern if you don’t. For more ideas, use the fantasy name generator or the list of 50 tavern names on the LoreKeeper blog.

Is the tavern map generator free?

Yes. No account is needed for a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep going and save maps.
