What is the D&D Cave Map Generator?

This free cave map generator draws a D&D cavern, lair or Underdark passage on a grid. Describe the cave — a bear’s den, a kobold warren, a flooded grotto, a drow outpost — and in about a minute you get a top-down map with chambers and tunnels, a key of named locations, hazards such as chasms, unstable ceilings and underground rivers, and the cave’s history. No account needed.

Example map: The Hollow Hum

What comes with the art: a key of named locations, hazards you can run and the history of the place.

The Hollow Hum

Dungeon (cave) · Square grid, 5 ft per square

A crystal cave system under a hill that hums at night. Kobold miners have dug too deep and woken something in the lowest chamber.

Map key

  1. 1.Squeeze Entrance

A crack in the hillside 3 feet wide. Medium creatures squeeze; Large creatures can’t enter.

  2. 2.Kobold Diggings

Low tunnels with pick-marks everywhere. Kobolds have rigged the ceiling to fall on intruders.

  3. 3.Singing Gallery

A cavern of huge crystals. Loud noises make the crystals resonate.

  4. 4.Underground Stream

A fast, cold stream 10 feet wide. Swimming across takes a DC 12 Strength (Athletics) check.

  5. 5.The Heart Chamber

A geode the size of a chapel, cracked open from the inside.

Hazards

  • Rigged ceiling: DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d10 bludgeoning damage and be restrained under rubble.
  • Resonance: a thunder spell or a loud noise in the Singing Gallery deals 2d6 thunder damage to every creature in it (DC 12 Constitution save for half).
  • Darkness: no natural light anywhere in the cave.

History

The hill was a druid circle once. The druids sealed what slept in the geode; the kobolds dug it out looking for gems.

D&D Cave Map tips

Caves are natural dungeons: no corridors, irregular walls and terrain that matters. Narrow squeezes, underground rivers, chasms and darkness change how a fight plays.

Remember darkness. Characters without darkvision need light, and light makes them easy to see from far away. The hazards list on each cave map tells you what is down there.

For big caverns, use 10 feet per square; for tight tunnels, keep 5.

Fill it with monsters

The free monster generator makes the creatures that live there, with 5e stat blocks at the CR your party needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What scale should a cave map be?

Use 5 feet per square for tunnels and small chambers, and 10 feet per square for large caverns where the party may be spread out.

Can I make an Underdark map?

Yes. Describe an Underdark passage, settlement or lair and the generator draws it with the hazards and inhabitants you would expect.

How do I run darkness in a cave?

Characters without darkvision need a light source: a torch sheds bright light for 20 feet and dim light for 20 more. Creatures in the dark can see that light from far away.

What monsters live in caves?

Anything that hates daylight: kobolds, goblins, oozes, spiders, bats, hook horrors. Use the free monster generator to make something new at your party’s CR.

Is the cave map generator free?

Yes. No account is needed for a small daily allowance. A free account lets you keep going and save maps.
