Threefold Knock
the lodge on the frozen lake where the drowned knock beneath the ice
Built on stout piles above the glassy, dead surface of a highland lake, the lodge smells of wet wool, resin smoke, and a faint, briny copper tang that riders say is the lake's breath. Inside, low lanterns gutter through tallow smoke; the common room is a tight, timbered space with benches bolted to the floor and furs draped against the shuttered windows. Every so often — when the wind dies and someone speaks too soft — a distant triple rap answers from beneath the ice, felt more than heard as a low vibration under the floorboards. Conversation hushes, mugs are set down, and the room turns a degree colder.
A warped driftwood plank hangs above the door, nailed with three iron rings; frost has rimed the wood and the rings, and a single, shallow gouge looks like a knuckleprint — no words, only the rings.

Drowned Three
4 cpThree small sips of lodge ale served frozen to the rim; drinkers say the last swallow makes the knocks sound nearer and lingers with a chill down the spine.
Poor (5e lifestyle: about 2 sp a day)
Hobel Tress · cook
A squat, scarred man who stews salted fish and seaweed cakes in a pot that never seems to empty.
Sila Brend · barmaid
Fleet-footed and watchful, she serves ale with a smile that doesn't reach her eyes and keeps an ear for the knocks.
Tovin the Ice-Fisher
A patient, greying netsman who believes the knocks are directions to a submerged chest and hires help to cut the ice at night.
Marta Vale
A scholar of old rites who collects drowned trinkets and insists there is a sealed shrine under the lake tied to a drowned priest named Yul.
1
Tovin claims Yul's token rattles beneath the ice near the old cedar piling and will mark a hole that opens onto a sunken cellar.
2
Marta Vale says a sealed stone reliquary bearing a priest's name, Yul, lies under the western frozen bay and that breaking it could wake the lake's dead.
3
A trapper from the far ridge swears a fisherman named Beren went under the ice with a lamp and never returned; the knocks grew louder the next night and the lamp washed up with a carved bone token in the reeds.
