The Burlbound Lantern

the inn beneath wandering boughs

You push through a curtain of moss and step into a warm, dim round chamber whose walls breathe faintly. The inn occupies the hollow of a colossal, slow-moving tree: planks are set into living wood, lanterns dangle from knotted ribs, and a soft moss-carpeted stair coils upward like an unfurling frond. Light filters through gaps in the bark, throwing shifting leaf-shaped shadows across rough tables; a low, constant creak underfoot marks the tree's ponderous stride. The air smells of sap, spiced stew, and a trace of old embers—there is the distant echo of hooves on loam, and sometimes a bird's muffled alarm as the tree shifts its path. The crowd is a curious mix: woodsmen in resin-sheened cloaks, a scholar clattering with ink-stained fingers, a pair of cloak-wearing hunters trading coded directions. Conversations fall to hush when the tree rocks; then laughter or a ballad rises as if to reassure the living wood. Small curios hang from beams—weathered maps, a child's carved fox, a dried sprig that hums faintly when rubbed—each item conspiring to tell you this is a waystation for travelers who cannot be pinned to a single road.

Over the door

A carved oak lantern hung inside a split burl, the metal frame rust-streaked and the glass clouded; faint leaf-scratch glyphs circle its rim—no words, only a single rune of a walking root.

The keeper

Merrin Thatch

Firbolg

Manner

Quiet and deliberate, Merrin runs the Burlbound Lantern with a patient, almost ritual cadence; each guest is greeted with the same small bowl of broth and a question about where they meant to be. He treats rowdy customers with a protective calm and smiles like a rooted thing—slow to anger, quick to offer a corner and a listening ear.

Quirk

Merrin hums an old walking-song under his breath while polishing mugs; when he hums, the lantern above the bar swings in rhythm.

Stats

Use the Scout stat block; AC 13 (studded leather), carries a walking staff that acts as a quarterstaff (+5 to hit), knows pass without trace and speak with plants once per day.

A hot spiced brew with a curl of pine and ember; it sharpens memory of places you've passed—drinkers gain advantage on Navigation or Survival checks related to past travels for one hour, though repeated sips tug at dreams of root-paths.

Sura Knotling · cook

A compact gnome with sap-dark hands who seasons everything with smoked pine and guards her iron pot like a king.

Gav the Ledger · barmaid

A quick-tongued half-elf who serves ale in a single motion and keeps a hidden pencil for tallying rumors and debts.

Regulars

Hest the Mapwright

An ash-haired cartographer who trades fragments of lost tracks for stew and is hunting the heartwood map Merrin hides.

Ilyr Gnawsong

A traveling bard who collects the tree's routes in haunting verse and is convinced a ghost fox haunts the lowest root-hollows.

Tamsin of Hollowbrook

A soft-spoken hunter who claims to follow the tree to protect a child that rides beneath its roots and will pay handsomely for aid.

Rumours
  1. 1

The Hollow King's iron idol was split—one shard was taken by a hermit to the Knotted Hollow; he traded it to a 'marker tree' that now walks and keeps the shard inside its heartwood.

  2. 2

A nameless thing called the Root-Caller was heard singing beneath the roots near Blackfen; Hest the Mapwright wants someone to map the route and bring back a carved comb his ancestor lost there.

  3. 3

Tamsin claims a child hidden in the tree's lower hollows was stolen by a band of green hunters who rendezvous at the Broken Milepost; they trade stolen relics for passage on wandering trees.

Look out for
A living stair spirals upward—GM can use it to stealthily change the inn's layout each day (roll 1d4 to shift table positions and a random hanging item).Patron ledger nailed to a beam: writing a name and coin lets a visitor reserve a secret route the tree has taken (Merrin controls which routes are real).
