The Jester's Compass
where every night points a new way
Warm lantern light and the smell of roasted root vegetables hit you before the door finishes swinging shut. Laughter and three kinds of music overlap—fiddle, drum, and the occasional off-key lute—while performers weave between the tables balancing plates, telling stories, or daring whoever's nearest to try a trick. The room is a patchwork of mismatched chairs and colorful cloth hung from beams; candlelight pools on a central common table scarred by dice and spilled ale. Patrons clap at every small success and cheer when someone stumbles; it feels less like a tavern and more like a long-running show where everyone's been cast.
A carved wooden sign painted in bright, chipped colors: a compass rose with a laughing mask at its center; the paint peels but the carving is crisp, and a string of tiny brass bells tacked to the bottom jingles when the wind—or a passing troupe—stirs it.

Compass Punch
5 spA bright, fizzy mix of spiced cider, a splash of mead, and a secret citrus tincture; it loosens tongues and makes people luckier at games for an hour (grant advantage on one Persuasion or Sleight-of-Hand check).

Nim · barmaid

Old Lurk
A stitched-up gnome gambler who claims to remember Marlo's troupe and wants someone to find the troupe's lost ledger (he'll trade leads for credit at the bar).
Risa Braebuck
A once-famous bard now muted by a throat injury; she teaches tricks of stagecraft and is secretly cataloguing performers she suspects are part of a hidden circus.
Hogwin 'Two-Taps' Mer
A retired footman who collects odd trinkets from traveling shows and recently bought a rusted key said to be from the carnival's strongbox.
1
Marlo the Candle-Spinner vanished with the travelling Brightsway Carnival; an old playbill hidden behind Maprin's bar hints the carnival's last stop was the abandoned fairground at Bridemeet Hollow.
2
A rusted iron key sold last week at the market by a peddler named Fien unlocks a chest with 'performer's receipts' that belonged to a ringmaster called Corven — Hogwin 'Two-Taps' Mer claims he bought that key.

The well behind the mill outside town now bubbles faintly with colored smoke at night; Old Lurk swears it's used as an entrance to a hidden performer’s lodge beneath the earth.
