The Sooted Oven
the inn where the village brings its pies
Steam and warm flour greet you before the door closes: the air carries cinnamon, baked apples, and the tang of cider. Strings of dried hops and strips of ribbon loop from rafters, and a crooked bulletin board near the hearth lists pie contestants in looping ink. Laughter and clinking plates come from a packed long table where villagers compare crusts; a few musicians trade quick reels by the fireplace. Lanterns glow honey-bright, flour dust flakes in shafts of light, and a counter displays a tower of pies — some humble, some fiercely gilded with sugared crusts — each with a tiny scrap of paper naming its baker.
A round iron skillet swung on a weathered ring; soot-black rim and a single gilded apple stamped in the center. The paint is chipped but the iron gleams where hands have rubbed it smooth.

Modest (5e lifestyle: about 1 gp a day)
Merta Finn · barmaid
Fleet-footed and sharp-eyed, she balances platters through the crowds and remembers every villager's favorite pie.
Old Jory · baker
A grizzled ex-millhand who wakes at midnight to tend the ovens and grumbles about pastry weights like they are a moral failing.
Miller Greta Holn
The miller who enters every pie contest with grain from her own mill and who quietly expects the inn to pass her notes to a hidden patron.
Constable Hobb
The stool-bound constable who connoisseurs a savory pie as carefully as a case; he wants to keep the festival peaceful but fears scandal more than theft.
Tansy Reed
A traveling pie judge who arrived with a leather satchel of stamps and the power to disqualify any baker for minor infractions.
1
Miller Greta's original 'Golden Crust' recipe vanished from her mill last harvest; she claims a night watchman saw a cloaked figure heading toward the manor.
2
The manor's steward, Harbin Croot, offered a secret payment to whoever ensures the festival crown goes to a specific baker — witnesses saw him slip a coin purse to someone near the inn last week.
3
An old hollow oak outside the village hides a rusted chest of festival medals and a ledger of bribes; a child named Perri swears she watched a man bury something there at dusk.
