The Last Kindling
the inn beneath the silent oak
A low-roofed wattle-and-daub house pressed to the village green, The Last Kindling smells of peat smoke, lemon balm, and something faintly metallic like moonlight on copper. Inside the common room, light is warm but thin; a single iron lamp burns with a steady, almost bluish flame, throwing long crosshatched shadows on the beams. The conversation is soft and careful — villagers nod at strangers, eyes flicking toward the cellar hatch — and the hearth's embers pop as if keeping time with a secret. Behind the bar, shelves are lined with jars of candied roots and odd little bottles; a portrait painted in the sitter's prime hangs over the register, though the sitter behind the bar looks the same in person. The floorboards bear the marks of many glances: scratch-marks from carving games, a ring of stones for nightly story-trading, and a polished patch where someone has rubbed the doorframe for luck. If you listen at the sill you can hear the steady drip of water from below, like a heart beneath the house. Newcomers sense that more than ale is on offer here — history, favors, an exchange of names for things unspoken.
A soot-dark wooden lamp hung from ironwork; the lamp's glass is clouded and shows a tiny painted sprig of oak inside. The iron is pitted but solid; no words, just a faint scorch mark at the bottom rim.

Moonlit Draught
5 spA clear, chilly mixture of spring water, a hint of lemon balm, and a single crushed silverleaf — it sharpens senses for an hour (advantage on Perception checks for 1 hour, mild insomnia afterward).

Hester Trim · cook
A stocky woman who hums old lullabies while she stirs a pot and slips a pinch of 'garden-night herb' into stews for those Marun nods toward.
Tomas Reed · barmaid
A lanky young man with ink under his nails who remembers every face who owes a coin or a favor and keeps the ale warm with conversations about distant markets.
Brina Kop
The village apiarist who scratches thin runes into her honeycombs and comes to the inn to trade gossip for a glass and a sample of Marun's spring water.
Constable Hobb
The slow-speaking constable who prefers to drink at a corner table and who recently asked Marun in private whether the midwife left the village or was taken.
Old Jerr
A retired woodcutter who claims he once carved a notch in the Moonwell Oak and now dreams of a bell that rings only at midnight.
1
The Moonwell Oak: Old Jerr says the ancient oak across the green rings with a sound like a bell when the moon is full; someone took a fresh notch from its trunk last fortnight.
2
The Missing Midwife: The midwife, Ilda Verran, is written at the top of Marun's ledger as one who drank the spring water — Constable Hobb fears she was taken because she knew a secret about the village's founders.
3
The Silverbell Locket: A child's silver locket engraved with a tiny bell was found near the oak and now is said to chime in the cellar at midnight; Brina Kop swears it hums against her honeycombs when danger comes.
