Hearth of the Howl
the refuge at the pass's final bend
Snow crunches underfoot and a bell tinkles the moment you step inside. The inn is built low into the mountain’s flank; the great hearth takes up one wall, its hearthstone blackened from constant fires and stacked with rescued pines and mountain driftwood. Light from the blaze falls in warm bands across fur rugs and patched wool curtains; the air smells of roasted root, smoked ham, and pine resin. A dozen low tables flank the hearth where miners, shepherds, and storm-stranded travelers huddle under heavy cloaks. Along the far wall, a half-dozen keen-eyed rescue dogs curl on raised benches or nosily inspect new arrivals, tails thumping good-naturedly. There is no hurry here—voices are soft, mugs clink, and the keeper moves with the easy patience of someone who has pulled folk out of avalanches. When the wind screams outside, the inn holds like a promise.
A soot-darkened iron disk hung from a stout timber arm; a silhouette of a leaping dog carved into it, edges singed and smeared with old salt, no words, just a looped leather strap and a faint smear of paw-print clay

Torin Buck · barmaid
A barrel-chested ex-pathfinder who brings mugs with a steady hand and an eye for who needs a warm room or a quiet lie-down.
Rill · stablehand

Kedra Fal
A veteran shepherd who keeps asking about a collapsed ice tunnel and will trade a soft wool blanket for any news of a missing person there.
Edran Holt
A cartographer mapping the pass who pays for shelter in exchange for sketches of hidden crevasses and old cairns.
Mave the One-Eyed
An old guide who brags about surviving a storm that swallowed an entire ridge and claims a ruined signal post still holds a useful ledger.
1
The ice tunnel at Black Cleft collapsed two winters ago; a miner named Joram Kest was inside and nobody has seen his rope or lantern—the chest under the Hearth may show where the entrance was.
2
A signal post on Raptor's Spire contains a ledger with the names of a smuggling crew who use mountain storms to hide caches; Mave the One-Eyed swears the post still smells of tar.
3
Edran Holt sketched a narrow ledge called the Whisper Shelf where old cairns mark an herb called frostroot that cures frostbite—he'll sell the precise coordinates for a map and a night's lodging.
