Hearth of Ironpaw

the refuge at the shoulder of the pass

Snow-weathered timbers cling to the slope like a tired traveler. Inside, the great hearth dominates the room: a squat stone maw that throws a golden wall of heat and the crackle of resinwood scents the air with pine and spice. Rescue dogs—lean, patient, shaggy—doze on braided rugs and spring awake at the clink of steins; one often noses a new arrival for warmth. Soft lamplight and warm stew fog the windows; mountain-scarred maps and tattered harnesses hang in deliberate disarray, suggesting competence behind the homely clutter. Conversation is low and practical: route gossip, the cadence of travel plans, and the occasional coo to a dog. A small raised nook by the hearth offers straw mattresses for those who came in late and a wooden pegboard at the door carries taped notes asking after lost travelers.

Over the door

A heavy iron ring nailed to a cedar board; below hangs a painted iron paw warmed by a tiny brazier that still glows, the paint crazed but the paw polished by years of hands and harnesses. No words, just the paw and scorched soot at its edge.

The keeper

Marn Hobb

human

Manner

Marn runs the Hearth with patient efficiency—he listens more than he talks and checks every boot for wetness before he speaks. He treats strangers with a quiet, no-nonsense hospitality: soup, a warm blanket, and blunt questions about where they were going.

Quirk

When nervous or pleased he rubs the same burn scar on his palm in a steady rhythm, as if calming both himself and the dogs.

Stats

Regulars

Lysa Vorn

A lean hunter tracking a lost lead dog named Bran; she'll trade information for help following old trails.

Old Brenn

A retired avalanche-runner who claims there's a collapsed shrine of the Sky-Holder at Ridgewatch and keeps a pencil map of a brittle ledge he refuses to show anyone sober.

Rumours
  1. 1

Kest Hallow, once leader of a Northern Patrol, vanished two winters ago; a faded patrol harness tag with Kest's mark was found nailed behind a cairn near Blacknar Ravine.

  2. 2

Bran, the lead rescue dog of a nearby volunteer pack, ran off three nights ago after a scream at Foxpass; Lysa Vorn believes he was taken toward a ruined shepherd's hut called Greyfen.

  3. 3

The collapsed shrine of the Sky-Holder at Ridgewatch holds a weather glass that still tracks storms; Old Brenn says the glass can be repaired if someone pries open the sealed altar chest.

Look out for
A rack of well-kept rescue harnesses and ropes available for hire (hire rope or harness for 1 gp per day).A noticeboard with clipped notes: requests for guides, lost items, reward offers, and Marn's private chalked symbols marking trustworthy parties.
