Praetorion

Imperial Watch

A Praetorion stands like a living emblem of the state: helmet crested, breastplate polished to a dull shine, and posture immovable. They move with disciplined economy, forming polite but implacable ranks; when a Praetorion steps between strangers and the imperial will, its presence is a statement — not merely authority, but an expectation that order will be enforced. Its training makes it predictable in combat, but that predictability is lethal when dozens of them act in concert.

Actions

Multiattack. The Praetorion makes two Spear attacks.

Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8+2) piercing damage.

Shield Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Reactions

Shield Wall. When a creature the Praetorion can see attacks an ally within 5 feet of the Praetorion, the Praetorion can use its reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll.

Lore

Praetoriae are the uniformed sentries of imperial cities, conceived centuries ago by magistrates who sought soldiers that could embody law as clearly as a posted edict. They are recruited from among town militias and veterans, drilled until their motions are as precise as a clockwork hinge. Although not magical by birth, some units have been tempered by ritual steelwork and oath-binding that gives their presence a strange, calming authority over crowds. Scholars of the Kestian Archives write of the ’Silver Accord,’ a pact between city-states that first standardized Praetoriae training and the designs of their cuirasses. The militia of the merchant-clan of Vorrenhire still preserves a ceremonial company that wears braided cords and carries the heraldic standard of the Accord. Local legends hold that a single Praetorion can halt a mob — not by slaughter but by sheer, unyielding discipline — and that deserters who break ranks become hunted by their own cohort.

Appearance

A Praetorion is a human-sized figure in layered plate and scale: a smooth breastplate stamped with a simple sigil, segmented faulds over chainmail, and a rounded helmet with a low visor and a short horsehair crest. They wear heavy leather greaves and carry a long spear with a blunt buttcap and a short, broad shield emblazoned with the same sigil. Their plates are scratched and dulled rather than gleaming, and their cloak (when worn) is a staid slate gray. Faces glimpsed beneath visors are all disciplined lines and watchful eyes. Scale for an artist: the Praetorion stands about 6 feet tall (similar height to an average human), spear reaching roughly shoulder height; show them in formation with another human to emphasize their rigid, squared stance. Textures: worn metal, coarse fabric, scuffed leather; helmet creases and dented edges should show long service, not decay.
