Ledgergrim
Tollkeeper Accountant
A Ledgergrim is a dour, bespectacled humanoid who treats highway tolls like a balance sheet and travelers like line items to be reconciled. It sits cross-legged on a plank across a bridge, ink-stained fingers flicking through a fat ledger while its one keen eye measures coin, gait, and excuses with the same clinical detachment. The creature's presence is unnerving not for physical menace, but because it turns every conversation into a slow, inevitable audit — and when the numbers don't add up, the ledgergrim enforces collection with methodical brutality and petty, humiliating fines.

Multiattack. The ledgergrim makes two Staff attacks.
Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+1) bludgeoning damage.
Tossed Toll (Recharge 5-6). Ranged Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4+1) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or be distracted until the start of the ledgergrim's next turn, giving disadvantage on the target's next attack roll. (DC 11 = 8 + proficiency bonus + Intelligence modifier.)
Demand Ledger. The ledgergrim produces its heavy ledger and points to a name. Each creature of the ledgergrim's choice within 10 feet that can see the ledger must make a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or spend its next movement inspecting its belongings (it can't willingly move more than 5 feet until the end of its next turn). On a success, the creature is annoyed but unaffected.
Ledgergrims are the strange byproducts of old bargains between bridge trolls and practical-minded humans: a troll who could not be bothered with sums hired a human scribe to keep accounts, and that scribe, through repeated exposure to troll superstition and fetishes carved into bridge timbers, slowly warped into a ledgergrim. Where trolls favor brute commerce (toll or death), ledgergrims turned commerce into ritual, binding tolls, debts, and favors into rules written in slow black ink. They are most often found at old crossing-points: stone bridges over mountain passes, rickety causeways across salt marshes, and the carved wooden walkways of ruined estates. A ledgergrim will keep meticulous books of every soul who crosses its span and the circumstances of their passage. Local toll-keepers, such as the Guild of Stoneways and the antiquarian Lysen Tirn, keep wary correspondence about them; some collectors prize a ledgergrim's account-keeping as a source of obscure pedigrees and debts, while travelers whisper that a wrongly recorded name can bring strange claims centuries later. Ledgergrims do not roam — they adhere to their bridge like moss — but they will call on allies from nearby toll-collecting covenants if a paid debt is not honored.
A ledgergrim stands roughly the size of a human clerk but with an awkward, compact posture: hunched shoulders, long, thin forearms, and stubby fingers stained dark with ink. Its scalp is thinly haired, giving prominence to a forehead creased with permanent furrows. A single round monocle of polished bone or glass is wired into its temple, magnifying one small, sharp eye; the other eye is a pale, flat disc with a faint carved pattern — a remnant of troll bargaincraft. It wears a patched wool waistcoat over a threadbare shirt, a leather moneypouch at its hip, and a strap across its chest holding a heavy bound ledger. The ledger's cover is dark, swollen with receipts and vellum, and small iron tally-tags clink against the creature's knees. Its limbs end in callused, near-human hands with ink-stained nails and the faint greenish tint of troll blood in its knuckles. Scale reference: about the same height as an average human (roughly 5–5.5 ft.), often perched near the center of a small stone bridge or seated on a wooden plank.
