Marrick Quilver

Congregant of Small Wonders

Marrick Quilver looks like an unassuming elderly man wrapped in ill‑fitting robes and a battered traveling coat, but his eyes glitter with a predatory amusement. He carries a crooked walking cane that clicks with hidden mechanisms, a satchel of curios, and an endless stream of petty deceptions — sleight of hand, whispered distractions, and harmless‑looking trinkets that unravel into traps or illusions. In a tavern he is a charming raconteur; in a lane at night he is a slippery adversary who will escape pockets and purses as easily as he plays at riddles. What makes him memorable is the cold calculation beneath his laugh: every trick is a step in a plan only he understands.

Actions

Multiattack. Marrick makes two Cane Strike attacks or one Cane Strike and uses a Trick.

Cane Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) bludgeoning damage.

Trick. Marrick activates one of the following subtle effects (no components required): • Distraction (no save): Marrick causes a small puff of colored smoke or a mechanical chime to distract a creature within 15 ft. The next attack roll against that creature before the end of Marrick's next turn has advantage. Usable every round. • False Pocket (Dex save DC 12): Marrick attempts to lift a small unattended nonmagical object (no larger than a coin pouch) from a creature within 5 ft. On a failed save, that object disappears into a hidden pocket in Marrick's coat and reappears on his person; on a success, the object remains. The DC is 12. The object returns to the target after 1 minute unless Marrick spends an action to stow it permanently. • Flash Illusion (Wis save DC 12): Marrick creates a brief, minor illusion (sound or image no larger than a hand) within 30 ft. A creature that can see the illusion can spend its action to examine it; if it succeeds, the illusion ends. The DC is 12.

Minor Spellcraft (3/Day). Marrick casts any combination of the following spells, using Intelligence as his spellcasting ability (spell save DC 12, +4 to hit with spell attacks): cantrips (at will): minor illusion, prestidigitation, mage hand; 1st level (3 slots): disguise self, charm person, sleep.

Reactions

Clever Parry. When a creature Marrick can see attacks him with a melee attack, Marrick adds +2 to his AC against that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss. Once used, he must finish a short rest to use it again.

Lore

Marrick Quilver is known among pickpockets and antiquarians alike as both a boon and a bane. He began life as an apprentice to a clockmaker in the merchant quarter of Veret, where he learned mechanics and the art of distracting an audience while his fingers worked unseen. Over decades he collected misfit devices, failed enchantments, and the disgruntled favors of small guilds. He drifted between cities, selling counterfeit heirlooms, teaching children a sleight of hand for coin, and occasionally swapping a favor for information. Scholars of uncommon folk magic, such as Archivist Riln of the Collegium of Veret, argue that Marrick's tricks are more than mere performance; he has a rudimentary command of illusion and charm that he bolsters with mechanical contrivances. The Grainwrights' Ring — a smuggling circle that once employed him to lift seals from wagons — both fears and reveres him for never being caught outright. Legends in back alleys say Marrick traded a winter's worth of warmth for a single secret, and that he keeps that secret folded inside a false thumb bone in his satchel.

Appearance

Marrick is a slight, stooped man about 5'6" with wizened, creased skin and a tangled beard threaded with silver and dark staining from grease and ink. His nose is bulbous, and his eyes are a pale gray that pierce with unnerving focus. He wears layered, patched garments—a faded waistcoat pocketed with hidden seams, a long coat whose inside is lined with stitched pockets and tiny springs, and gloves with worn fingertips. His walking cane is ornate but battered: a brass head with a small sliding panel and a hollow shaft that stores lockpicks, chalk dust, and a rolled mirror. His satchel looks ordinary until one watches it open by invisible springs or emits a soft puff of smoke. Textures: threadbare wool, patched leather, soot‑streaked linen, tarnished brass fittings, and the faint gleam of glass lenses and watchworks. Scale notes: his belts and pockets are full of curiosity-sized items—tiny vials, spare gears, and a palm-sized music box with a false bottom.
