Grimblet Rackmoor

Plundered Knight-Errant

Grimblet Rackmoor is a ridiculous and unnerving sight: a wiry goblin waddling under armor two sizes too large, visor askew, a dented surcoat stitched crudely with trophies. He moves with frantic confidence, swinging a stolen blade with surprising skill and barking bawdy orders through a throat hoarse from mimicking accents. What makes him memorable at the table is the blend of comic desperation and cunning: he will flee with precious loot if the fight turns, but until then he fights like a trickster who believes himself a legend — and sometimes, against all odds, he is.

Actions

Multiattack. The creature makes two Scimitar attacks or one Scimitar attack and uses Stolen Trick.

Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+3) slashing damage.

Stolen Trick. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4+3) piercing damage, and Grimblet attempts to snatch or tug a small worn item (coin purse, ring, or strap). The target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (target's choice) or lose the item to Grimblet. If the target fails the check by 5 or more, it is also momentarily off-balance — the target has disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its next turn.

Lore

Grimblet began life in the refuse alleys outside Brindel Gate, where he learned to pick pockets and mimic the patter of tavern patrons. One moonless night he slipped into a dying caravan of adventurers and, seeing the armor too bulky for a proper noble to carry, decided it would make a vastly superior costume to his usual rags. Over the next months he followed roadways on the edges of towns, imitating patrol calls and picking up mannerisms from market guards until he could bellow commands that made hastier bandits hesitate. Merchants and low-level sellswords tell tales of the "Rackmoor Parley," an event where a tiny armored figure convinces a gang to surrender half its spoils. Scholars at the Brindel College of Folkways — notably Marrek Dunwell — record Grimblet as an example of social mimicry: a creature that survives by copying the armor and rituals of those it can't defeat. The Guild of Six Fingers, a thieves' cabal, treats Grimblet as a nuisance and occasional ally; they trade information for the shiny buttons he collects from helmets. Grimblet fears nothing more than organized knights who can read heraldry and name the blazon on the very sarcens he wears.

Appearance

Grimblet is a small goblin, roughly 3 1/2 feet tall. His armour is a cringe-making collage: a dented brigandine chest piece whose plates are riveted in mismatched rows, a cracked iron gorget, one oversized paulice with strap marks, and a buckled kite shield repainted with a child's hand to hint at a crest. The helm is a mail coif with a discarded nasal helm perched crookedly; the visor is beaten inward on the left side. Fabrics beneath the metal are patched leathers and a damp surcoat bearing faded, wrong-colored heraldic streaks. His left ear is notched twice; his fingers have burnish marks from constant filching. Dirt and grease streak his skin, and he wears a necklace of tiny trinkets — buttons, a thimble, a single silver coin — trophies he flashes when bluffing. Scale reference: Grimblet stands beside a human commoner about waist-high and dwarfed by a standard doorway, his armor looming comically larger than his frame.
