Grishn the Slink
Gutter Thief and Ratmaster
Grishn the Slink moves like a shadow with practiced indifference — a wiry figure whose fingers are quicker than most eyes. What makes him dangerous is not brute strength but a network of ragged rats that swarm the alleys at his signal: eyes and ears that warn him of patrols, create distractions, and tug coinpurses loose. In a crowded market or a moonlit roofline he is never alone; his rodents are extensions of his will, turning urban refuse into a battlefield of traps and misdirection.

Call to Rats (Recharge 5–6). Grishn emits a clipped, high whistle that summons his trained rats to harry a foe within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 9 Wisdom saving throw or be distracted: they have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks and attack rolls against targets other than Grishn until the end of Grishn's next turn. On a successful save, the target is unaffected. Many of Grishn's rats lurk in cover; calling them does not summon new creatures but directs nearby trained rats to a given target.
Grishn began life among the sluice-ways and toppled cisterns of Kestern's Lower Ring, learning early to trade scraps for secrets. He taught orphaned rats to bring news of passing guards and prize foodstuffs, and those rats in turn bred a small, semi-feral cohort that still answers his whistle. Smugglers and fence-keepers in the Rats' Ledger (an informal thieves' ring) pay him with coin and safety for his ears in sewers; those who refuse find pouches emptied in the night. Scholars of urban fauna, like Professor Maelle Torm of the Grayward Institute, have catalogued Grishn's network as a proto-domestication experiment: his rats respond to dozens of subtle whistles and scents, performing scouting, distraction, and retrieval. Local constables call him 'the Informer' when convenient, and 'the Harrow-Mouse' in whispered curses. Grishn fears little — save for large hunting dogs and floodwater — and prefers narrow alleys, crooked gutters, and the shadowed eaves above market lanes for his lairs and ambushes.
A slight humanoid some 5 feet tall at most, Grishn wears a patchwork duster of oil-dark cloth and mismatched leather pieces reinforced at elbows and knees. His hands are lean and ink-stained, nails filed to points for picking coin and rope. His hair is a tangled mop, often tied back with a scrap of red ribbon that doubles as a rat-whistle loop; a faded tattoo of a tiny rat appears on the inside of his forearm. Around his belt hang small pouches, a biting dagger in a frayed sheath, and a folded net. The rats with him are small, varied in color, with matted fur, bright intelligent black eyes, and collars of braided twine — they move in tight, rehearsed flurries, sliding through holes in rooftops and gutters as if the city itself obeyed them.
