Karthun Engine
Ancient War Engine
A towering relic of a vanished age, the Karthun Engine lurches like an iron mountain with the deliberateness of a siege. Its bulk is a patchwork of brass plates, latticework pistons and whirring gyroscopes; when it moves the earth trembles and old wards flicker and die. More than a machine, it is a thinking battlefield: it studies the cadence of combat, adapts its tactics, and can turn entire battalions to scrap with a single breath of radiant arc-fire.

Multiattack. The Karthun Engine makes two Slam attacks and may use Arc Beam if its systems allow.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 27 (4d8 + 10) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature of Large size or smaller, it is also grappled (escape DC 18). The Karthun Engine can grapple up to two creatures at once.
Arc Beam. Ranged Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, range 300/900 ft., one target. Hit: 58 (12d8 + 10) force damage.
Overload Pulse (Recharge 5-6). The Engine releases a shock of regulatory energy in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 19 Charisma saving throw, taking 66 (12d10) radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Constructs and objects that fail the save are also stunned until the end of their next turn.
Reactive Shield. When the Karthun Engine is hit by an attack, it can use its reaction to shift ion fields and gain +6 AC against that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss.
The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.
Detect. The Karthun Engine makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
Rear Slam. The Engine makes one Slam attack.
Precision Bolt (cost 2 actions). The Engine fires a concentrated bolt at one creature it can see. Ranged Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, range 120/360 ft., one target. Hit: 33 (6d10) radiant damage. If the target is a creature concentrating on a spell, it must succeed on a DC 19 Constitution saving throw or lose concentration.
The Karthun Engines were perfected by the guild-forge of Yrs Telmar during the Second Calculus—an era when metalwrights bound algorithmic spirits to brass and bone to enforce city-states' laws. Most were dismantled or sank with their makers at the Fall of Yrs Telmar, but a handful survived in remote watch-pillars, deep vaults, or forgotten sky-anchorage ruins. Rural folk tell of one engine that still stalks the mountain passes, answering no one's banners. Scholars like Archivist Meron of the Scriptorium of Greycoil have catalogued fragments of the Karthun protocol and found disturbing evidence of layered priorities: law, then preservation, then adaptive offense. The Order of Keshra—an itinerant band of relic-hunters—claims to have witnessed an engine recalibrate mid-battle, suppressing its own destructiveness to avoid annihilating a protected grove. Where it lairs—if it can be said to lair—the Engine is both guardian and judge, hunting what it interprets as threats and conserving what it deems salvageable for an unknown future.
Imagine a humanoid silhouette magnified into a skyscraping contraption: a headless helm of interlocking plates sits over a thorax of exposed gears and a lattice of glowing conduits. Limbs are asymmetric—one arm a cable-studded pincer three times the height of a man, the other a smooth, cannon-lined column. Soldered repair patches, rune-carved stabilizers, and corroded inlays of copper and onyx betray centuries of field repairs. Its surface alternates between brushed bronze panels and scorched iron ribs; veins of faintly pulsing blue light travel under the plating where the engine's control matrix runs. Scattered sigils and faded inscriptions in Ancient Tek hint at both prayer and protocol; a human doorframe set against its shin would reach only waist-high.
