Kharvul Noxmach

Autumnal Colossus

Kharvul Noxmach is a gargantuan, ancient techno-organic colossus whose mossy, earthen carapace is scarred by rune-rivers and tufted with tall grasses and fungi. Its head is a carved, smoldering jack-o'-lantern with three triangular eyes that burn with cold orange light; it holds a rune-etched staff of ironwood and liquid-metal filaments that glimmer like oil on water. When Kharvul moves the ground trembles and the grass on its back ripples like a field at harvest — and wherever its gaze lingers, the jack-o'-lantern's light draws out memories, fear, and a hunger that leaves hollow husks in its wake.

Actions

Multiattack. Kharvul makes three attacks: two Slam attacks and one Staff Strike.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d10+5) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 19 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone and pushed 10 feet.

Staff Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d8+5) bludgeoning damage plus 18 (4d8) necrotic damage as the staff siphons warmth. On a hit the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of Kharvul's next turn.

Pumpkin Breath (Recharge 5-6). Kharvul exhales a frigid, ember-laced cone of spectral harvest light in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw, taking 66 (12d10) necrotic and fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Creatures that fail the save by 5 or more are also frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Harvesting Grasp. Ribbons of metallic vine and root lash from Kharvul's back to a point it can see within 90 feet. One creature there must succeed on a DC 19 Strength saving throw or be restrained; the vines siphon vitality, dealing 22 (5d8) necrotic damage at the start of each of the restrained creature's turns. A creature can use its action to make a Strength check against DC 19, ending the effect on itself on a success. The vines last until Kharvul dismisses them (no action) or they are destroyed (AC 18; hp 60).

Summon Zenith & Cronyx (Once per Dawn). Kharvul calls forth Zenith and Cronyx from the shimmering pattern in its carapace. Zenith (a Medium liquid-metal sentinel) and Cronyx (a Large scarecrow-like techno-construct) appear in unoccupied spaces within 30 feet and obey Kharvul's mental commands for 10 minutes or until destroyed. If Kharvul is reduced to 0 hit points while they are active, they explode in a final surge (each deals 28 (8d6) force damage to creatures within 20 ft., DC 19 Dexterity save for half).

Reactions

Reactive Field. When a creature Kharvul can see hits it with a melee attack, Kharvul can use its reaction to grant itself resistance to that attack's damage type until the end of its next turn and deal 10 (3d6) force damage to the attacker.

Legendary actions

The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.

Slam. Kharvul makes one Slam attack.

Shifting Filament. Kharvul repositions up to 30 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. If it ends adjacent to a creature, that creature must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn as metal whispers scrape at its mind.

Lantern Glare. Kharvul fixes its jack-o'-lantern eyes on one creature it can see within 120 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or be stunned until the end of Kharvul's next turn and take 14 (4d6) radiant or necrotic damage (Kharvul chooses the type). A target that succeeds is immune to Lantern Glare for 24 hours.

Lore

Scholars argue whether Kharvul Noxmach was wrought by a forgotten forge-mage, grown by a long-vanished agricultural cult, or awakened by an elemental fault where technology and soil collided. The oldest accounts — the burnt pages of the Cartography of Withered Hedges and the field notes of the recluse archivist Myrrin Vossun — call it a Sentinel of Harvests, a protector turned predator when its creators died. Villages near the Bramblefen and the slag-plain of Hirth-Gul tell of seasons when Kharvul would stride like a living hill, sowing fertile ash that bore crops overnight, then return to its solitude, leaving those who slept beneath its shadow changed and hollow-eyed. The Colossus drew the attention of the ironbound order called the Verdant Conclave, who sought to shepherd it and relearn the lost rites that fused wire and root. Their priest-engineer, Denys Hallowmere, left a treatise of counter-rites now kept in the cloister of Thornmire — a text most adventurers seek to undo Kharvul's more terrible impulses. More recent legends speak of twin echoes at its side: Zenith, a living filament of liquid metal that ripples across Kharvul's shoulders like mercury lightning, and Cronyx, a scarecrow-clad sentinel of woven metal and bone that mimics the Colossus's crooked posture and laughs in hollow clacks when the lantern-eyes burn brightest.

Appearance

Picture a vast, walking hill: Kharvul's chassis is stitched from hammered plates and petrified wood, overlain with a living carpet of grasses, small flowering shrubs, and clusters of luminous moss. The back rises in gentle terraces where tufts of rye and wheat sway; tiny burrows and rusted girders peek from between root-like cabling. Its shoulders and arms are a lattice of braided metal and vine — sometimes the metal appears to behave like liquid, crawling and re-forming in tiny waves. The head is a single carved pumpkin of blackened orange rind, ringed with rune-scores; three equidistant eye-slits glow with cold ember-light and a soot-streaked grin splits the face. The staff it bears is taller than a man, capped with an orb of mercury-like metal and wrapped in tattered burlap and scarecrow accoutrements (twine, bent pins, and stitched glyphs). Scale: when standing before a ruined stone doorway the pumpkin head alone fills the opening and its shoulders tower twice as high as a fully armored human. Textures: cracked rind, pitted iron, braided roots, slick metallic gleam, tufts of grain. Expression: both mournful and hungry; its posture mixes the slow, steady gait of a beast of burden and the deliberate menace of a siege engine.
